Homewrecker gets useful

I agree with you Frisky. But I think maybe sapping an SG and waiting on a pyro to unsap it is ample opportunity to backstab them.

Oh stop whining spies, I don't whine as a heavy when they buff the huntsman.

Using a huge hammer to mess with spies? Sign me up!

TBH, I think this updated is related to engi update* balance issues.

Double the opportunities for a nice backstab now. You can get the engi, and the pyro!

A smart pyro wont stay in 1 spot hammering the sentry with his back turned to a spy, knowing that he just killed the engi and is trying to get the sentry as well.

I'll make that trade. If I go pyro, odds are it is because the spies have become too effective. It takes 2 whacks with a wrench to remove a sap, and a good spy will round robin all of the equipment - eventually killing half or more. God help you when a pair of competent spies work together.

I'll grudgingly give up the axe to pop off saps, as odds are I'm playing pyro to help protect the equipment (as well as everyone's back).

Would you consider the pyro being smart if he's using the hammer to begin with?

Exactly.

Pyros these days are only good for spy killing, so this update will help them plenty. Nobody actually uses offensive pyros anymore, with the new heavy being basically a ranged pyro, and all the other class buffs. Pyro has basically become complete defense, blowing back ubers and catching spies.

I disagree with this statement completely. Everyone's REALLY overplaying that nerf. Not only is the backburner the same strength as before, but I did the math in another thread. we're talking about a 0.3 second difference in killing speed in light classes, and similarly small differences with the bigger classes.

Remember the days when pyros didn't have the airblast ability? I certainly do. Now, we have the option to return to that, but also have 100% crits from the back. That's HUGE! The pyro is an awesome offensive weapon, still, and saying that it's limited entirely to defense is ridiculous.

To answer your question, it would depend on how you play pyro. Imo, there are diff play styles for pyro, 1 of which is usually a big team player. He spy checks and protects engis and stays usually in between the point just capped and the point being taken and keeps spies off his team as well as helps repel projectiles when necessary, I believe this type of pyro would benefit from using the hammer most.

Pyros (non W+M1 pyros) are team oriented. They're goals are: Disrupt enemy spy activity, help protect Engineers Equipment, and Air-blast opposing ubers. At the end of a round, you probably won't see your name in lights, but you'll know you contributed invaluable services to your teams victory. Team effort isn't about getting the most points, but helping your team win ~

Now hold on a moment. Spies are freaking out, and engies are loving it. But, I think we're all failing to look at one particular detail:

Why in the HELL would I, as a pyro, trade away my own ability to one-shot any flaming enemy that isn't a heavy for the ability to kill a sapper, if I, as an offensive class, just happen to be kicking around a sentry embankment when the engie isn't there? Better yet, why the hell would I whack the SAPPER if instead, I could flame and then one-shot the SPY? That just doesn't make any sense.

Yes, there have been times when I'm playing engie, There's a firefight around my gun in which I die, and then 3 of my teammates stand around my gun and watch helplessly as it's sapped to death. But, it still doesn't make ANY sense that a pyro would sacrifice his own damage output for the ability to kill sappers. In my head, this remains a trivial weapon.

Thanks for opening my eyes, master engie.

I was going to rejoyce, but now that you mention this, it is pretty useless.

Why did pyros ever get the HW in the first place?

Pyros are an offense class, not a support class. I want to set things on fire, not run around shooting air at things.

Note that I believe the pyro changes are perfectly fine. Backburner still needs a buff though...

I think this is no longer the case, especially considering the different kinds of changes to the Pyro Valve has been including over the years.

No, pyros are still a great offensive tool making a push much easier when combat gets close. Thing is that was all he could do, now he has much more versatility in line with the other classes.

I play offensive pyros and i can say they are as good on the front lines as they are at engie bases. (this is with the normal flamethrower, as i dont use the BB)

for example, they can put out burning medics and other burning classes. they can airblast enemy's into the air, preventing escape as your teammates shoot them down, and they can reflect that stupid projectile spam you see in some places...

one reflected rocket may save a teammate... a crocket, even more, and if that crocket hits a medic even more so... Pyro is good offensive class IF it is used properly...

Guys, I think we're missing the elephant in the room here.

It's a pyro. It shoots frickin' FIRE. Why should a class that is solely based upon roasting the flesh of other classes into burning charcoal that vaguely resembles something that USED to be human be restricted to being the engineer's SECOND TURRET?

The pyro can kill a scout, sniper, spy or engie in 1.2 seconds. With it's WEAK gun. It also has an ax that can kill everything but a heavy in ONE SHOT. And, if you trade in the ability to reflect other people's rockets, you can do not double damage, but 300% damage, 100% of the time.

How is it possible that we can call this class only fit to sit with an engineer in the back, helping him fix his gun? Regardless of whether the homewrecker is useless or not, you can't possibly look me in the eye and call the pyro a support class.

Also, incidentally:

Thanks for opening my eyes, master engie

This is now in my sig.
