why all the rap hate?

Eminem: I'm starting to use drugs again. (His old stuff was great though)
Actually his recovery album is actually about him staying clean, he isn't on them any more :P

@Noise964: It isn't my all-time favorite of his but it is definitely in the top. :) I think in order to appreciate some of his songs you need to know their foundation.

@_Me_ if you cannot take the time to read through the thread (even if just skim for the general idea/consensus) then you cannot honestly expect people to want to read your opinion when you don't even care to read theirs. That is just rude and mean. :(

If you had bothered to read through you would see that people already posted about not thinking it was music and then others responded to that...etc etc back and forth.

@Rukus.: Just an FYI...Eminem himself apologized for his latest music saying it wasn't his best and he owed the fans more.

Video removed for Cryptex and to help keep the thread alive.

The title is "Not afraid" by Eminem.

In case you haven't heard/seen it yet. xD

Overall, I think this was a nice thread to be made. It is refreshing to see how members handle debates (some were rather disappointing, but people already commented with details so I'll avoid it). Thanks =D

Hope to see more thought provoking ones down the road.

Eminem's old stuff was better, hell it was even better before he got famous.

Most rap is crap.

There is some good stuff out there, though.

Example:

This is real rap; confusing, weird lyrics that make no sense, but is still fun to listen to.

I do realize this is a rap thread, but all videos are to abide by the same rules you follow in the server. Further inappropriate videos will be removed and the thread will be locked.

I like some of the older stuff like run-DMC, grandmaster flash, beastie boys, etc. But as a musician, myself, its hard to find much if any musical talent in the modern rap genre. Not to say there is none, but in my eyes it appears far too rarely.

To answer the question of, "why so much rap hate?" I think the dislike for the genre stems from the majority of the lyrics. Much of the more popular (or at least widespread) lyrics, in my opinion at least, have about as much depth as a sheet of paper. Also, much of rap (correct me if I am wrong please) is played with non-traditional instruments (drum machine, computer effects, midi sampling, etc.). This last bit is totally my opinion and I am not saying it is either right or wrong, but some 10 year olds I know have as much skill as some of the modern rappers (prime example, souldja boy tell em).

Everyone of course has a different outlook on music, different people will like different sounds, and you have to respect that. For example, I am currently listening to nine inch nails and I know some of you probably would call industrial noise. Even tho I understand why some would call it noise. :P

A message to those who believe Hip hop music production does not require talent; ever heard of a guy from Chicago named Kanye West? Ever heard the albums College Dropout and Late Registration.

Now this is some good hip-hop.

Producers like Kanye are actually quite well learned in the theory of music, whether studied formally or not. Not anyone can get on a computer and make beats that sound like that.

Kanye West's ego is what ruins it. I still don't like the sound of the modern day rap/hip hop.

Some (very few) have pretty good lyrics, but nothing like 2pac, Ice Cube, Biggie Smalls. Those guys were artist. The songs actually hit the heart.

I could care less about the guys ego. Sure he's full of himself, but I would be too if I was the best hip hop producer/rapper since 2000.

He's seriously the best? Hm. I'm just not seeing it. Or hearing it, rather. :p
Then again, I don't listen to hip hop.

Lupe Fiasco is fantastic as well.

Wale was good as well before his album dropped.

But really nothing compares to 90's hip hop in my books.

Ready to Die
Illmatic
The Chronic
Doggy Style
Enter the 36 Chambers
Liquid Swords
Fishscales

and so many more fantastic albums.

I would argue that he has been extremely consistent with the quality of his work over the past decade. When you're looking at someone that big often they're sophomore album are no where near the caliber as their debut. However Kanye has managed to put out four critically acclaimed records with another on the way.

another good Bronx rapper is MF Doom

It is fine if you are entitled by your opinion, I think that's great.

Here is the reason why I hate rap and Hip hop (basically Today's Radio music)

Reason #1
Too Repetitive : saying the same words over and over and over and over again is not cool, it practically makes people understand that you are not smart enough to think of other things to say in the song.
Reason #2
Most of them are Racist:
People Hating on other people just because of their race and basically their skin color. Mostly offensive to Caucasian People. Enough said.
Reason #3
A lot of them (Like Lil Wayne) Talk too much about drugs, sex, and being greedy.
It is the truth, go watch some Music videos by people like Lil Wayne or Pitbull and you'll know what I mean.

Those Are my Reasons, I personally prefer something like Christian Rock, Techno, Dubstep, Classical Rock, and Screamo.

Some guys think that all rock is emo, hmmm I didn't know that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were Emo.

Do you have legitimate evidence to believe this? I can pull up lists and list of song lyrics that never repeat anything short of a chorus, which is something predominantly featured in your preferred genres. Don't associate the entire genre with the few songs you've heard.

For a good example, you can go look at the lyrics for Eminem's "Won't Back Down." It's a series of non-repetitive stanzas with a small chorus break in between them.

Reason #2

Do you have legitimate evidence to believe this? Especially to quantify "most?" I can't recall a specific song I've heard on even the radio recently that goes out of its way to attack a race. I'm sure there's some; I know there's some. But that goes for absolutely every genre because that's human nature. It's certainly not unique to the genre and it's certainly doesn't legitimately dominate the genre.

Reason #3

"Gangster rap" and rap are generally disassociated by people into the genre. While musically gangster rap still has merit, a lot of the lyrics and meanings behind them can get stupid. Lil Wayne especially there. But don't associate the entire genre with the songs you might hear on the radio.

You say that some people think all rock is emo. You probably think that's a closed minded view and that if they actually did any kind of research into it, they'd realize that rock is a deep and beautiful genre. You'd also have to accept that a lot of the mainstream rock will sell itself into lyrical stupidity because "that's what sells." (COUGH NICKELBACK'S DARK HORSE ALBUM COUGH). It's a universality; you just have to realize that it's not any different and explore.
