SLI these cards.

Thanks to a new power supply and amazing case I decided to SLI 2 video cards. I have this

Just make sure when you SLi your GTX 460s they have the same cores/SP. A 768 MB 460 will not SLi with a 1 GB nor will an SE model. You must have the exact same model GTX 460 not the same brand.

And my GTX 460 will be replaced by a Radeon 6970 2 GB

6970 lines up with 580 but with not so good drivers and without 580 prices and heat. Wish AMD moved up the memory bit bus...256 bit is the limiting factor, only so many SP you can stuff in a card and the core clocks.

wat. you being serious? The 6970 competes with the 570. Thing is, drivers will improve the 570's performance. 6970 is pretty much stuck there.
That 256-bit bus isn't the bottleneck. It's mostly the drivers, with the 40nm being the limiting factor.

Yeah but for the price? 580 is 9-15% faster but is 33% more expensive, plus I'm getting my 6970 for around 150 (trading in my 460 for it). And Crossfire scales better than SLi...

And jumping to a smaller transistor size isn't that easy. 40nm are now being the new standard so now prices have eased up. Remember when 40nm first came out? Early adopters are smacking their heads into walls right now.

edit: And no I'm not an AMD or an Nvidia fanboy. I buy the best value graphics card. In fact the most I've ever spent was 218 for my GTX 460 during the summer. But to be honest the best value I got was 100 for my 512 MB 4870, craps on alot of GPU for that price range right now.

TSMC cancelled their 32nm process, that is why the 69XX series sucks compared to expectations.

And i own(ed) a 5770... I am definitely not smacking my head.

Neither are 5870 (first consumer 40nm product...ram doesn't count) owners really.

6 series haven't really been a huge upgrade. Only the 6850/6870 were IMO.

And yes, crossfiring may have finally beat SLI.

2x6950's beat 2xGTX 570's =/ and 2x6970's are almost on par with 2x580's

2x6850's are the best bang for buck now probably, they easily beat a 5970 and with some overclocking im sure theyre better than 2x5870's

2x460's are still great cards tho. I can find them on craigslist for like $120-160 1GB version.

BTW, when you SLI two diff cards, like a PNY reference and Gigabyte non-reference, what happens? You can't voltage tweak?

And ATi screwed up over consumers when the suggest MSRP for the 5850 and 5870 was 199 and 299 respectively, then was 300 and 400 at launch. But now with 40nm in full swing, the 6950 and 6970 debut price were as promised, 299 and 369 respectively which will eat away at Nvidia's 580/570 fanfare.

it should be fine. I would try to get the same exact model that you already have.

Less complications and room for error. Plus you will probably be able to voltage tweak.

From what i heard, you can voltage tweak two diff kinds esp if their non-reference.

1) Fail in terms of performance. It was widely speculated to match up with the 4870. Not only did it fail in that respect, it was quickly downgraded to only a midrange. Popularity != performance. And it's not even competent in high resolution gaming with quality turned up. Only offers DX11 and less power consumption (not a big concern for me)

2) At launch 5850/5870 were completely out of stock. Literally I got an email that it was in stock, clicked the link, added it to my cart and it was already sold out. By the time they were in stock the prices were jacked up like mad. Even then supply was very poor to describe at best. Microcenter (my workplace) sold alot of them cause the markup hadn't happened yet but then employees were buying them en masse before any customers could buy them.

It sounds to me like SLI 460s is a great option for you. Check your motherboard and make sure it's SLI-friendly. I know people keep going on about the Radeon line, but if your mobo supports SLI then you wouldn't want to mess with Crossfiring on it.
