A crazy little thing called Kalt...

Being able to realism only when an advisor is on would completely destroy the premise for the idea. The advisors have a lot to do already and wouldn't want to sit around just to realism on maybe even a nightly bases... using the event server would also destroy most of the rationale behind this idea...Communities build servers, not PM lists. Having a server that is realism only and not open to the public otherwise is a waste of eGO's time and resources. opening the event server to be a normal map would destroy the opportunity to events (it's not just to kick pubs off a server for an event)

Thats why I was asking if it could be opened up be a map vote server, my point was we have a server just sitting empty 75% of the time, why not open it up, maybe not to pubs, but open it up to eGO members with a generic password so that people could just get in and play a special map, like Argentan, Jagd, Switch, Palermo and others that are not as popular. Heck if an eGO member wanted to take the time, he could even pre arrange something like this on the forums. Say we'll be meeting at a specific time to play a specific map. It doesn't take away from any events and helps create some new ideas for events even maybe. eGO members will just have to be under the understanding that if an event is to begin then they will have to either leave the server, or join up to the event. Heck you might even see event turnout increase. My point was not to open the event server to the masses, but to eGO members to give them the ability to select the maps they would like to play for a short period, so we don't have a entire server sitting empty all the time.

As for realism, I don't know all the logistics behind it. I played it, it was kind of fun, but a lot of work up to playing and waiting after you die. Not very exciting for the ADD/ADHD world in which we live in. I do compare it a lot to jail, you get in, get told what to do, follow the rules, then some CT either kills you accidently or you didn't quite follow his rule fast enough, then you spend 10 mins dead watching a bunch of stupid time wasting games go on.

I had an idea similar to jail for DOD, that was a little more exciting, it was a POW camp. My idea was simple, you had two teams the allies (half the team POW's and other half a special force to help break the POW's out of camp, and the Axis were the guards. The only special rules were, POW's could not use weapons and guards could only shoot Allied Special Forces and POW's escaping, the POW's would remain in a building the Axis could not enter, but they could see into, this protected the POW's from being wrongfully killed. There would be three exit points to the map, a hidden tunnel under the camp, the front main gate, and a broken fence along the back. Allied POWs could only use weapons they had picked up off the ground or were given by Allied Special Forces. How to win, either you eliminated all the guards or all the special forces and POW's were killed or executed. So there still would be the downtime after you die, however it shouldn't be as long because there is always a constant rush to escape. I tried working with Rogue Sniper about this, and there were some challenges with it, but it was possible to work this out, with only a few rules people would have to learn.

It'd be silly not to let pubs in. We change the PW of eGO only events anyways so we could set the generic password to eGO for pubs and eGO alike to use, it fills up more and we get realism

Realism is exciting, and in our realisms the entire round can only last 10 minutes, very rarely do we have it run to time, its happened twice this campaign I believe. Realism is exciting when you watch your last teammate and your last enemy duke it out, unlike Jail where the CT goes "lolol Knife fight?" "k" *CT shoots T* (I did that once, but Stormy kicked me, so I kicked him, then he banned me, they were dark times)

The reason leadership has said this wouldnt work (Though personally I like the idea) is the historical implications behind PoW camps (They werent all like the Great Escape, and even then, how many of them actually made it out?)

Thanks spray for clearing up the technical requirements behind starting up a realism server... Those facts said...What's the odds of Council granting us another server (maybe under the guise of the old sniper server) We create a server similar to the Comp team server and have it off the maul system if we can have The Realism Admins agree to create Ban Requests for anything rendering a ban.

I know this could pose a lot of issues e.g. Banned players playing on the server, etc.... That's why I'm asking for the probability for this to happen...

We could give out server flags (whether it be z(all) flag or a custom flag to modify realism mod plus a g flag(change map) We could have the initialize realism to change the sv_password and the hostname to “blah blah realism” password would be realism (default across the game)...during off times we could have a complicated password that isn't given out to non-realism admins

<insert beating a dead horse emote>
*expecting a no to this*

The problem is though, every time you start an event you have to boot out the pubs. This does not make the pubs want to return. Hence why I feel it should be kept eGO members only.

Leadership has never said it wouldn't work, this was simply just a brainstorming idea, we hadn't even designed a map yet to try this on. The point of the game is it gives a different spin on the axis vs allies flag capping, making it more story based than the usual. These are just ideas and suggestions I am throwing out.

They have denied this idea many times for a few reasons. 1: jail requirements 2: the fact that it relates to a german concentration camp... isn't fun in my opinion and is quite sick.

We wouldn't use the event server as a normal server, Im saying we should use it for pub realisms, instead of making a hybrid Kalt/Realism server.
I think we both just misunderstood each other.

Concentration camps are different the POW camps......

But they are saying that Realism is not feasible right now, my point is, you don't want to make the event server a pub server and have to boot people out.

It wouldn't be a pub server, it'd only be opened while realism where going on. The realism admins would have to to know when it's okay to run one and no (how long hey last) etc. at this point it seems only people with Rcon on the events server would be allowed to run it.

Concentration camps are different the POW camps......
Yes...but they can quickly become misconceived.

It's like saying our CSS Jail server is like Guantanamo Bay just because the prisoners are terrorist and you make them play "games"

I do like the idea of the DoDs jail style server... I just don't know how popular it would be in the DoDs group. CSS Jail is really popular with the younger crowd when I played it and well DoDs really does not have that big of a pool of young people still playing.

But I would freaking love to play it anyways!!!1!

Alright, time for crag to weigh in because of course it's what you've all been waiting for.

Starting off, aside from whatever logistical problems i would play a realism server and quite often do of late because it is much more intense when you either know the enemy is laying in wait for you to come around a corner but you've no idea where you'll be short from or you huddled in one position next to your teammates waiting for the sound of footsteps and knowing your likely not to survive the round.

The intensity of this style of play is fantastic and i've been finding myself seeking out other opportunities for realism.

That having been said from my understanding although it's not been ruled out leadership does not "like" the prospect. At the same time a Kalt server in most form will be like flogging a dead horse, one so dead that is been buried and exhumed to flog it some more. I like kalt, it's a fun map but not something i could play over and over again, that's a personal opinion in the same way that everyone who likes Kalt's opinion about kalt is?

Do we have some numbers to look at this objectively, I know running a successful server is about drawing in newbies and making them regulars by means of having good consistent admins, consistently good running equipment and having something they want.

The question i'm asking with a revamp of a regular Kalt-only server, Is there a lot of draw out there for other Kalt maps? how many kalt only maps are in the top say 10-20 of servers? If there are none in the top twenty that should be telling however, if there's say one or two that are always full then there's room for another, if there's 3 that are mostly full, will we just pull away from those.

Even a kalt rotation or kalt instant respawn is a variation of kalt. I know this sounds weird to say this when everyone keeps begging for Kalt back but How badly to people (read pubs) want it?

I know Kalt night is a often a flop but let's face it, it IS on a friday night. Those few of us with a social life probably aren't going to be playing (as i usually make it you can tell that i don't fall within that category)

For the Instant Respawning complaint that rounds would never end. My question is this, why should they need to?

I for one would like to see a palmero server (instant respawn) as it's one of my favorite non-eGO maps or a jagd map but i don't think these will have much draw

Let me ask this question, what is it about DOD:S that keeps people playing even though other arguably if not better, flashier games are out there. For me it's the level of skill required to play this (i find it harder than most others) and the fact that majority of the people who play have a good idea of what they're doing (mostly)?

Given that I argue that the best draw is going to be something that appeals to the players that gives them a manageable challenge and a thrill.

This is why League rotation maps that draw in better players (league players), a part-time realism server, or something else entirely

I've definitely have seen arguments against a league rotation server and i won't bother to argue for it, as with all rotation servers they tend to lose pubs as the map changes and i doubt there's enough league players, or even eGO regulars to make up that shortfall.

So if potentially Kalt isn't popular enough, and there are too many troubles with a rotation server, and a realism mod isn't feasible What is going to grab the pubs and make them say i want to play this server all the time, what map, what mods what rotation (if any) will be the right combo

But see with a DOD Jail type server, there would be no bossy guards telling people what to do and play, there job is to keep the POW's inside the camp and to keep everyone else out. It would make it more strategy based, then just fun based.

I know. That is what I like about the idea. It is also one of the most original at the moment :D

To many rules requires too much admining.

And a realism server would be different how???

Someone mentioned a comp map rotation which I also think is another good idea... But the server will have to be 100 tic for that to work or just about every comp type player is going to complain about it no matter how the server runs.

It's human nature to be resistant to change. The hard part is getting over that initial hill. I think DK's hesitation to embrace your idea is because he's not as familiar with the rules and gameplay flow, etc., so naturally it seems a daunting task to admin. On the flipside, he's an expert at realism rules+etiquette, so to him it's cake.

Realism servers attract members that understand how realism gameplay works. By Default servers are passworded..now most every realism player knows the passwords to these servers...they're all the same...one must only be intelligent enough to guess it.... A PoW camp would have a complex and unique set of rules to it. if it attracts a lot of pubbers they'd be required to learn the rules quickly...not to mention the amount of mod writing that would have to go into this would be highly unthinkable....

The issues with comp rotation servers are you cater to a unique group of people, while having all the issues with pubbers leaving durring the map rotation if they don't like the next option..... Comp players complain about 100 tick servers all the time, for our need 100 tick servers would actually kill the reg and not be cost effective..Jeod laid this out to us earlier today when Ron and himself explained that eGO pays for boxes, not individual game servers, meaning while we may be able to run 4 instances of 66 tick servers on a box we'd be lucky if we got 1 or 2 100 tick instances with decent shot registration (due to high resource usage the server would be running slow)..so 100 tick really would hurt the server more then it'd help it.
