Let's get back to the subject at hand, guys. We had the mini-meeting yesterday, where we discussed the following points (off the top of my head):
1.) 100 tick doesn't matter for 90% of our players, and will hurt us more than help.
2.) Shutting down servers to save money isn't an option; we own the actual boxes, so not utilizing them to their fullest extent is a waste. Obviously, we won't run 10 instances on one box, but we can't just have one on there.
3.) A part-time realism server is not technically feasible due to the way MAUL works. We do not anticipate setting up any kind of special user flags to allow a few people to have more access, especially not to a main 24/7 server.
-Granting eGs realism access in a manner like this would mean that ALL eGs in this community have that access. I don't want a DoD server that becomes as hard to admin as Jail.
-I am 100% personally opposed to the idea of a realism admin training class. It would be like the Jail one; 50 people freak out when it's announced and sign up, then everyone gripes afterward that they could have just read it all in the forums. My staff has enough trouble scheduling blocks of time out of their lives days in advance for this to add another course to the workload. I just don't think this is particularly necessary, myself.
-I don't want to have to create a Realism Admin Handbook like there is for Jail.
I think that after last night's discussion, we all understand that this part-time thing will not be happening. To be perfectly honest, please view Stormy's post, #100 (
http://www.edgegamers.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1739851&postcount=100). This is a post from the man who has brought Realism to this community, has fostered its growth, and been its biggest supporter. And what he's saying is simple: There's a LOT more going on behind the scenes than you (or even I, for that matter, since I don't play realism) realize.
Listen to the man. Quite frankly, if the #1 guy for realism is telling you it's a bad idea/not going to work out, he probably knows or sees something you don't.
4.) Adding a new server: We lost Sniper due to inactivity, and experimented with Argentan because Kalt was dead. And now there's a serious discussion of adding another completely different server to the mix? Here's a current listing of eGO servers from GameTracker:
Right now, we have the #2 server in eGO, behind an INS server. Keep in mind that INS has something like 100 players total nowadays, so there's quite a big difference. Flash has dropped to 201; it used to be top-50, as were all the others. Let's focus on getting back to where we were before (pre-super lag) we start adding specialty servers.
5.) Server ranks DO MATTER, because more people=more fun, and higher-ranked servers are more likely to have people on them. It's as simple as that, and Spray explained this very well last night.
6.) It's fine if people want to go into the Events Server and play realism for a little or whatever, but we would like to keep the gameplay primarily to Saturday nights. The server's there, and everyone knows the default password. What this really means is "don't harass people with RCON to open it up/set it up for you all the time." The default password can always be changed, remember... Keep in mind also that having realism available every night of the week will kill the overall enthusiasm for it. Supply and demand, guys.
The sooner we get a good discussion of the Kalt variants, the sooner we can maybe get moving with this project. Everyone OK with this? Let's steer the subject back to Kalt from this point forward and stick with that. Specialized stuff would be better at a later time.
