A crazy little thing called Kalt...

It's human nature to be resistant to change. The hard part is getting over that initial hill. I think DK's hesitation to embrace your idea is because he's not as familiar with the rules and gameplay flow, etc., so naturally it seems a daunting task to admin. On the flipside, he's an expert at realism rules+etiquette, so to him it's cake.

All I know is I spend a lot of time admming on the jail server because most pubbers don't know the rules...and jail is a pretty common and well known thing in CS:S (isn't unique to eGO) like a PoW camp would be.

A PoW camp would have a complex and unique set of rules to it. if it attracts a lot of pubbers they'd be required to learn the rules quickly...not to mention the amount of mod writing that would have to go into this would be highly unthinkable....

How would these rules be difficult???? When you set the environment up so that the rules can't be broken, its hard for it to be difficult. POW's are in a building that is not accessible to Guards. Windows bulletproof, doors don't open etc. Prison is accessible through a secret passage (ventilation system, or sewer), or if a Special Forces player blows a hole in the side of the building. (Would be nice to finally get some of those explosive achievements!)The only real issue is setting up a way to make sure the POW's themselves start out weaponless. They do it in CS:S, I can't believe it can't be done in DOD:S. Once a POW is out of the building and in the open, weapon or not, he can be shot on site. Guards are fair game any time, as our the special forces.

I talked to Rogue Sniper about this before, he did not sound like it was impossible to do, but it would take some time. I am not looking at this as a full time server, just an idea of something different.

Yeah but their would be no stupid games, no PT and all that other crap. No crouch walking, no lining up, no text games. Just normal DOD gameplay with a different storyline.

Install CSS and play Jail. ;)

Option 1: Realism pub server (these always have people in them and it seems like we pretty much always have guys on who can admin it)

Option 2: Back to normal Kalt

Perhaps rotation too but instant? Na to much of a stalemate.
We have Anzio already but least that map each side has a chance to win

I just dont see realism pubbers joining a part-time realism server, hoping that an admin will show up. Its either all the way or no way in my opinion. By the number of posts here I believe a kalt server will be sufficiently populated.

Let's get back to the subject at hand, guys. We had the mini-meeting yesterday, where we discussed the following points (off the top of my head):

1.) 100 tick doesn't matter for 90% of our players, and will hurt us more than help.
2.) Shutting down servers to save money isn't an option; we own the actual boxes, so not utilizing them to their fullest extent is a waste. Obviously, we won't run 10 instances on one box, but we can't just have one on there.
3.) A part-time realism server is not technically feasible due to the way MAUL works. We do not anticipate setting up any kind of special user flags to allow a few people to have more access, especially not to a main 24/7 server.
-Granting eGs realism access in a manner like this would mean that ALL eGs in this community have that access. I don't want a DoD server that becomes as hard to admin as Jail.
-I am 100% personally opposed to the idea of a realism admin training class. It would be like the Jail one; 50 people freak out when it's announced and sign up, then everyone gripes afterward that they could have just read it all in the forums. My staff has enough trouble scheduling blocks of time out of their lives days in advance for this to add another course to the workload. I just don't think this is particularly necessary, myself.
-I don't want to have to create a Realism Admin Handbook like there is for Jail.

I think that after last night's discussion, we all understand that this part-time thing will not be happening. To be perfectly honest, please view Stormy's post, #100 (http://www.edgegamers.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1739851&postcount=100). This is a post from the man who has brought Realism to this community, has fostered its growth, and been its biggest supporter. And what he's saying is simple: There's a LOT more going on behind the scenes than you (or even I, for that matter, since I don't play realism) realize.

Listen to the man. Quite frankly, if the #1 guy for realism is telling you it's a bad idea/not going to work out, he probably knows or sees something you don't.

4.) Adding a new server: We lost Sniper due to inactivity, and experimented with Argentan because Kalt was dead. And now there's a serious discussion of adding another completely different server to the mix? Here's a current listing of eGO servers from GameTracker:

RZa28.png

Right now, we have the #2 server in eGO, behind an INS server. Keep in mind that INS has something like 100 players total nowadays, so there's quite a big difference. Flash has dropped to 201; it used to be top-50, as were all the others. Let's focus on getting back to where we were before (pre-super lag) we start adding specialty servers.

5.) Server ranks DO MATTER, because more people=more fun, and higher-ranked servers are more likely to have people on them. It's as simple as that, and Spray explained this very well last night.

6.) It's fine if people want to go into the Events Server and play realism for a little or whatever, but we would like to keep the gameplay primarily to Saturday nights. The server's there, and everyone knows the default password. What this really means is "don't harass people with RCON to open it up/set it up for you all the time." The default password can always be changed, remember... Keep in mind also that having realism available every night of the week will kill the overall enthusiasm for it. Supply and demand, guys.

The sooner we get a good discussion of the Kalt variants, the sooner we can maybe get moving with this project. Everyone OK with this? Let's steer the subject back to Kalt from this point forward and stick with that. Specialized stuff would be better at a later time.

Thanks for this detailed and clear summary, J. Points noted.

Since Kalt is the only option on the board right now. My vote would be for a rotation of various Kalt maps, -without- the instant respawn.

I would prefer that the map changes not occur too frequently. Perhaps one change every 2 hours?

Also my take against instant respawn -- IMO it unnecessarily prolongs games. If I'm half-alive, out of medics, and almost out of ammo after a deadly fight with Chuck Norris and then capture his team's 2nd-last flag, the last thing I need is to have to fight a freshly re-spawned Chuck Norris again at their first flag.

Yeah, I vote for a 24/7 Kalt server, rotation. But rotation on a slower timer, so that you can get a few games done on each variation.

I am all for the original version of Kalt, rotation servers always lose numbers, plain and simple.

On a side note, it was leadership asking for different ideas. Thats the only reason this thread went off course.

if the realism server is out of the question i vote for a kalt jagd rotation, even just to see how popular they each are, i just cant stand the idea of going for the same old boring kalt that failed before, but please no instant respawn. also as someone said before the other kalt maps are buggy, unless we can get fixed ones its better we dont use them.

Feel free to submit ideas other than Kalt. It just seemed that many people were putting all of their eggs in one basket. We wanted to address the feasibility of Realism and now that its been said, feel free to move onto other ideas.
