eGO hockey players/watcher?

i've always loved hockey, but its nothing like it used to be

even crosby now (best player currently in the nhl) is no where NEAR the records of some of the good oldies. also theres just no respect in the league anymore, which is why you keep getting these headshots and stuff.
and the league themselves are just sooooo sensitive right now its ridiculous. i hate to see what new rules they bring out for next year in attempts to "stop headshots". what ever happened to the players responsibility to keep his head up?? if you're skating through the neutral zone with your head down you deserve to get clobbered.

and even so, all the injuries are terrible i can't disagree, but right now the league is not calling penalties/suspensions based on the actual rules, they are basing it on if the player layed on the ice for 5 minutes first.
there are numerous occasions where IN THE SAME GAME there was apparently a 'headshot', the guy acted hurt for 5 minutes, they call a 5 minute major blah blah, then later in the game there was an actual headshot (against the other team of course, retaliation) but the guy got right back up (tough canadian player or something) and they don't call a thing!!

its getting a little ridiculous

that is an AMAZING article and i agree with everything he says 100%. he touches on 2 key things that i left out in my post cause it was getting lengthy. one of the things are helmets and the gear today. hell i remember grapes (don cherry) talking about this back in 1992 i think it was, talking about the hard plastic equipment and how its going to kill somebody. also the old games like that and the old players, once they started introducing helmets into the game so many of the players said respect was going to be lost and people were going to be injured...and yup, it happened.

the second thing is the instigator rule. this is a problem IMO and the opinion of almost all hockey fans i know of. what happened to, you had a great hit or you're trying to rough up your star so what happens? the rough riders drop the gloves, fight, get it over with. now you can't do that the same you could back in the day because of the instigator rule...so now you literally have players carrying that revenge mentality over to other games until they can 'get them back' for whatever happened, and either headshot, hit from behind, knee em or something that could potentially end his career instead of just droppin the gloves.

anyway...so specifically speak on the crosby incident...i think that guy should have been suspended for the same time crosby remained out (so rest of the year). incidental contact my BUTT. he knew what he was doing, and where im sure he didn't mean to actually take him out of the game, that was the result to his action

You make a couple great points in your last couple posts.

First off, with Crosby not being close to breaking any records. Technically, that is true but it is such a different game now. So much more emphasis goes into X's and O's, tactics and line matching etc. Additionally, I don't think the best players have gotten worse, but rather the 4th liners are just THAT much better. There is so much more parody nowadays, especially from individual to individual. Every single player now is physically just a machine thanks to modern science..something that wasn't in the past. Also, the new era goalies are also a gazzillion times better then in the past which might also explain why no one will ever break the Great Ones records.

The instigator rule: I'm torn on this one. With the rule gone you would for sure get rid of little rats like Matt Cooke and such - which is only a good thing. But Ray Ferraro brought up some great points on the radio a few weeks back. With no Instigator rule, Derek freakin' Boogard would be able to go out and jump a Daniel Sedin type player and just get 5 minutes. Sure then bloody Rick Rypien would go and tune up Mikko Koivu or something to get revenge and it would be called even. But is that really the best way to attract new fans? I mean, I'm all for old time hockey and I hate when people say they should get rid of fighting completely but I do not think that I would enjoy watching something like that. (This also brings up some great discussion on whether we should cater to the "new fan" or stay with tradition)

On your points with the Steckel Crosby concussion hit. I agree 100%. Steckel knew exactly what he was doing when he cracked Crosbys' head. When contact was made it seemed as if both didn't see each other. But logically that would mean that both bodies would be unprepared to take the hit and then both bodies would have some sort of reactionary force in the opposite direction. Crosby does go flying. Steckel doesn't freakin' move from his original line of direction. It's like Steckel didn't even feel the hit. Because of this I am certain Steckel knew what he was doing, and so he was able to brace himself before contact..and thus explains why Steckel did not even move. The dude should have been suspended a looooong time.
