It's time to put eGO's knowledge of the order of operations to the test.

not sure how to post this without ruining it for others....

= 1

(Also, anyone ever learn those weird sayings to help remember them ??? mine was "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally"... random tidbit of info there)

Depends on what math book you learned from :P

I think no matter what the parenthesis should be eliminated first, but if you just add the 1 and 2 and then go from left to right you get 9. However, you could also use the distributive property, which results in 1.

IMO, all this proves is that without specifically stating the rules/syntax, text editors are inefficient means of showing math problems haha.

9

order of operations!

My pre-calc professor would be so proud.

There is only one correct answer though.

Math is the universal language so shouldn't matter what book since all math should end up being taught the same in the end.

Also the answer is 9

6?2(1+2)
6?2(3)
3(3) or
3 x 3
= 9

mmm. obviously this is a trick question.
Math professors would be RAGING right now.

There are 2 correct answers depending on how the question is written:

(6)?(2(1+2))
6?2(3)
6?6=1

(6?2) X (1+2)
(3) X (3) = 9

Math is the universal language so shouldn't matter what book since all math should end up being taught the same in the end.

The man is right on this count. The problem isn't misleading and the means to find it are there.

read my post above. the question is misleading and mathematically sneaky. It purposefully left out parenthesis in order for people to be tricked. For all intents and purposes, it's simply a bad question.

The additional parenthesis are not needed though. The answer only requires an understanding of the Order of Operations to solve.

6?2(1+2)
6?2(3)
3(3) or
3 x 3
= 9

aah ofc! Why did I "+" <.< ...

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

there fore

parenthesis eliminated
6?2(3)

then from left to right... the division
3(3)

continuing from left to right.. the multiplication

=9

The rules of left to right were implemented for just that reason. The mind interprets math wrong, which is why we have to train our brains to use the order of operations.

Multiplication and division are equivalent in the order of operations - when you have two of them in a math "sentence", you do them in order from left to right.

So, you do your parentheses first. Then you have a division and a multiplication left to do, so you start on the left and work to the right. Divide first, then multiply. That gives you 3x3, which is 9.

Edit: ack! Too late....
