There was a recent Drop Box post about too much cussing in Ventrilo and another complaint, where an e member jumped on a DL for using the word "bitching" in game. These two circumstances are just a sample of a problem regarding language use and how to admin it that we have to address occationally.

The issue is two-fold:

1. We're allowing too much cussing, and
2. We're not allowing enough cussing.

For instance, warning someone for using "bitching" is overkill, and likewise, divisions having every Vent room set to R-rated is overkill.

Every now and again we have to remind admins to use common sense, because we're never going to have a forbidden word list. Lighten up, and look at the character and intent of the individual before using admin or, for e's, warning. Admin action is only an immediate necessity when someone is disrespecting another player.

Everyone should try to communicate at a PG-13 level out of respect for other players, but remember, we're here to have a good time, not to look for reasons to ban people.

Common sense is your friend. We should use it more... however its not very common.

So very true!

Common sence and maturity are they keys to have a good community, even to have a good society.

Well said. I had a prof who was always saying if you cannot not get your point across with out resorting to profanity then you are not showing your education level.

Yea, I've heard this before and I highly agree. It is the morons who have to swear at you to get a point across.

I'll admit it, I'm very very very lenient when it comes to language in our servers. Pretty much, unless it's offensive or repetitive, I don't really care.

Our policy on textual swearing is to warn(I think), but you'll rarely ever catch me warning for text/mic language offenses unless it's directed at someone in disrespect. Even then, I take into consideration if it's a joke or hostile.

I have a pirates mouth, spend 5 minutes in a Rated-R channel with me, you'll understand. There's a reason I specifically only hang out in Rated-R rooms. While minimal cursing(Per MOTD) should be applied, we should also enforce the 17+ restriction. I catch a lot of underage kids in Rated-R rooms.

Sorry, I guess I'm slacking, hahahaha.
I'll work on this, thanks! :)

Thank you for bringing this to attention and for the clarification, Arti.

There is NO age restriction to enter a Rated R channel. Do not admin the channels as such. Those who enter do so with the understanding that the language/conversation may not be PG-13.

Could have sworn that there was an age restriction on there in the vent MOTD at some point. Good that that's cleared up.

I can be sure ventliro's Rated-R rooms are 17+ rooms!

Ventrilo MOTD/Rules said:
"R" Rated Rooms

  • "R" rated rooms do not mean that "X" rated content is allowed.
  • No excessive swearing. This means that you are not allowed to drop your favorite flavor of the "F" bomb every 2 minutes.
  • No racist, sexist, or other demeaning language. This should be obvious and no slack will be given to offenders.
  • Minors are expected to avoid these rooms.

It doesn't say they minors aren't allowed to enter.

Yes, what Mikkel posted is correct. The key word is "EXPECTED". Minors are Expected to avoid these rooms, but they're not prohibited from entering them.

Akin to saying: Enter at your own risk.
