Am I being dumb?

First of all, I'm just not very good at BC2. I can't understand how to excel at this game in any fashion.

I played long enough while I was SiSSY LaLa to unlock everything and get some double gold stars and what not, but I was still terrible. It didn't matter if I was killed by someone I never saw, or actually got to shoot at the guy, I always lost, vanilla and hardcore.

So, my question is, am I being a little dumb in just not wanting to buy BF3 simply because I don't believe I'll be any good at it?

I got to alpha test, and I can't say that was best experience either. It was really fun and immersive, especially the animations. But, it's ultimately a sad feeling at the end of the match when I feel like I've accomplished nothing positive.

I spent a lot of my time in BF3 Alpha on the ground, because if I ran for more than three seconds I'd be shot by someone I couldn't possibly have seen. And for some reason, others ran around just fine and killed lots of people.

I'm really hoping that the TDM in BF3 is something I'll be able to play, since I'm good at CoD and other FPS games that utilize TDM with certain map designs. But it BF3's TDM is SQDM like in BC2, then I guess I just wont buy it, 'cause I'm bad at that too.

who cares if youre good or bad dude, play for the community, play for the memories, play for fun; that's why it's called "play" and not "work"

Well if you're wanting to get better at the game, there's a couple main points to follow:

1) ALWAYS check your back, constantly, especially in rush. Make it a habit to turn around every 5-10 seconds depending on the number of possible paths to your location the enemy has. This involves knowing the maps a bit better and possibly even spending an entire round getting familiar with your location that you plan on using to protect/assault an objective as well as the path that leads to it.

2) If you think something is a bad idea, don't do it. Think you can plant that objective without smoke while there's 3-4 unaccounted for snipers in the area? Probably not, so try to find a way to remove the problem or if tickets are running low you may as well take your chances.

3) Never spray and pray, ever. It's a total waste of time and effort on your behalf and with any gun other than the VSS and M9-3R it's generally going to yield better results as a burst fire/single shot method. The type of gun you use will recoil and you'll have to account for those tiny changes as you fire every other click or so. The semi-auto assault guns are a slight exception to this, aim for the chest and slightly left/right depending on enemy movement to have it recoil straight to their face. If they crouch, it's an insta-headshot.

4) Hotkey the map to a spammable button... say... mouse4 or mouse5 if available, if those aren't available, something on the numpad works just as well. Abuse the hell out of this any time you aren't shooting someone or aiming down the sights. Recons that are worth anything will have motion mines out for you and if you're medic you can easily handle the amount of dead assault/engi's running to their death that aren't using the map.

5) Don't let death bug you too much.

On top of all this, there will always be somebody out there that just beats the hell out of you no matter what. If you're letting that get to you then maybe FPS games just aren't your type of game? Even if you're the last player on the scoreboard with 0/23 and maybe 200 points, as long as you had fun playing the game it doesn't matter. Feels good to win, feels even better to have a good time and lose.

Also, if you want personal help with recon, I'd be happy to explain how a few things work but my schedule is quite iffy at the moment due to college starting up soon.

Anywho, hope it helps if aynthing.

(you should only quit a game if you don't enjoy it)

I second and third everything what TheAngryPanda said :) He is correct.

I play the games for the fun and enjoyment. Back when I first started playing online games I use to care a lot about my kill rates. It drove me crazy  and I use to rage quick a lot :laugh:

Now I play the games for the fun, enjoyment, and for eGO unit. My kill rate really sucks :thumbdown: which I really don't care about. Just as long I had fun playing the game that evening that all that really counts. :):)

Playing games is for the thrill, the fun and enjoyment of hanging out with friends in-game. If your not having fun on the server you pick to play on, switch servers their is lot of them out their to play on. If you not satisfied playing the game change it. Their is lots of games out their on the market to choose from.

Games are meant for fun, not to take for real, just for enjoyment :)

Perhaps I made it sound too K/D.

Mostly what I'm trying to say, is that if I go for the objective, I can never get a hold of it or defend it properly, if I engage in a firefight I almost always lose, and walking around for a few moments only to fall dead is frustrating to me.

I've had lots of fun in BC2, but it overall frustrates me if I'm trying to actually do something specific.

I don't mean to sound arrogant or elitist by what I'm about to say, but maybe it's just that you're playing against some of the upper tier players in this division?

I know we've made certain people from CSS rage quit before on isla innocentes and port valdez before. It's possible that maybe you're getting frustrated because you're on such an even playing field that you absolutely can't progress at all due to that instead of a flaw on your end.

The game itself is frustrating, by the way. There is no denying that, be it from registration issues to hitbox crap, or even the instant-disarms after a LONG fought after tough objective arm. Things like that make me want to kick a mangy puppy into the opposing team's general direction and watch it maim them. Especially the cocky people that didn't really do anything. But that's besides the point, lol. :D

well one thing i love to do is to flank very often and randomly. if you can manage to flank behind the enemy's main concentration of ppl, you can usually sneak behind and grab some quick and easy kills on their back line (snipers usually) and then proceed to shoot ppl in the back, assault is very good for this kind of play since ammo is a nonissue and having an alt weapon so you can use c4 helps a ton to clear out ppl hiding behind cover since you can just c4 jump throw it over stuff and get tons of kills

I play the Medic a lot and work at keeping my team mates alive :) I normally let my team assault and I keep them up and fighting and defend their back side. I really like it when I find a good team rushing and I am following revving putting them back in the fight :).
I also if I see our team is getting pin down on their assault, I will use a flanking movement to take out draw the attention my way and even suicide myself so my team can over power and advance forward. :)

I don't really care about my score in game so much, just the trill of the charges and the team tactics game play how we take them down :) I love it when it bring back the good-o-days myself in the military squad leader. :) :)

Yeah I totally agree with everything above. Like Panda and Kentucky said, it's all about fun, and if you're worried about score, then try some of their tips.

One thing that may be part of your problem is squading. Do you work together with your squad? and if you do, do you use them as a mobile spawn point and do your own thing? or do you try to stick with them? One thing I do when I'm not doing very well, is find someone (usually in your squad) who is doing really well, and just stick to em. Follow them around, switch to the kit they arent (like if they're medic, switch to assault and give em ammo, or vice versa). When I do that, my score goes up, and my deaths usually go down a bit.

It also makes it a lot more fun because you're helping out your teammate/team by working together.

But yeah, the main idea is just have fun. As you employ certain team tactics, the game gets more fun, and the score/KDR will follow.

A good kit loadout is also a huge factor. Do you like faster firing but less accuracy? Try the F2000/MG3. Like high damage? Try the AUG/M60. I have just a few loadouts with each kit that I always stick with. Right now, my favorite (for the assault) is the AEK + Magnum ammo + Dot sight for long range maps, and the AUG + accuracy/magnum + dot for close quarters maps. I really like accurate guns, and I do pretty well using quick bursts, so I do pretty well with those two loadouts. For the medic, I use PKM(long range maps)/SAW (medium to close range maps) + accuracy + dot sight and also use quick bursts. But it's all about your play style, so try different things, and eventually you'll find something that clicks.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope this'll help keep you on the Battlefield =)

One thing I learned, which I have not found to be the case in almost any other shooter is using cover and tactics are necessary.

Most games, you run and gun. In BC2, you hide, then plan, then execute. And if you dont use cover to your advantage, you will die, all the time. There is another dimension to this game that goes beyond most shooters and that its not all about twitch reactions, its actually about strategizing, using map elements to your advantage and playing with your team.

It took my quite some time before I got out of that rut of just being killed all the time. Also, make sure you learn your maps.

I suck too add me and lets suck together

No you don't...silly bob. :P

Well, all I can say is that I used to care way too much about my stats on another TF2 server and I eventually got banned for a month for trying to exploit them and get myself some more points.

After that, I learned that although I still like to track my stats, they don't mean the world to me. I've played almost 3 full days of BC2 (not much compared to others, but it seems like a lot to me) and I'm still not great at it.

Thanks for the encouraging words guys.

Spent some time screwing around with some e's from CSS yesterday in the Normal Mixed server. Think I'm going to play BC2 with the sole intent to just amuse myself. Maybe I'll try crashing vehicles into things, lol.

Play either recon/assault w/ shotgun and use C4. Rig an ATV/jeep and destroy tanks like a pro!

(Hopefully you already knew that, but its how I got all my recon unlocks. xP)

When I first started I found this to be a good guide -

When in doubt be like bmonkey..... grab the sv98 and find a good hiding spot and just cap fools

I find that having the mindset of thinking when playin BC2, treat it as real life, you will die guaranteed if enemy has upper hand on you (cuz u expect everyone in game to be a trained soldier right? ^^ ), you have 1 life, you will die painfully. Every single little decision you make, consider your own fight-or-flight response as if it were real life. Simulate a few steps ahead, ask wut will happen if i move there, what happens if i show myself now, i'm running across a field so where could there be enemies in cover that can spot me. Bcuz, this is the stuff you'd think about in a live gunfight right?

Although not everything in real life crosses into virtual life, like making a decision to sacrifice a teammate for the team in BC2 is easy, u know they'll respawn. In real life? That's either self explanatory, depending on what your philosophical worldviews are

This is my style as well. You can time it when there is a distraction in front of them like tanks or a helo. They will never see you coming. Of course the trick is getting back there, but the game has its little nooks and cranny's to help an infantry get around. Knifing snipers on the hillsides can be a joy. You can get 3 or 4 in a row if they don't ever take the scope down.
