The Twelve Days of Caelmas

On the sixth day of Caelmas, Caelestis gave to me...

...a Whoopee Cap!

Today's winner is Sublixt, now the proud owner of a Whoopee Cap! And yes, in case you were wondering, I went through and reviewed all of those screenshots individually. Time well spent! It's a good thing being a Division Leader doesn't mean I have responsibilities, or else that might seem like I'm not doing my job.

What does the seventh day bring? Get your thinking caps on if you want a cap to show you think, for today is another quiz. This time, it's Roman mythology. You know the rules: first person to send me the correct answer in a PM on the fora wins the prize. You may guess more than once.

Which god of the Roman pantheon is referenced in the name of a character in the Harry Potter series?

Too bad I decided to go to sleep before midnight last night.

That shouldn't stop you from answering. I have yet to get the correct response. One person has given me the right character from the book series but not the god. Several answers have just been completely wrong and I can only guess that people were making guesses based on the Latin-sounding name those characters have. By far, though, most people went freewheeling into the unintentional trap of guessing a goddess. Remember, god means boy deity.

Mythology is beautiful and everyone should have a Ph.D in Roman & Greek Mythology.

I beg to differ. Any serious student of Shakespeare, English Literature, the Renaissance, Art History, or even Colonial and Revolutionary America should know Greek and Roman mythology. Shakespeare's audience would have the same response to Cletus' question as John Quincy Adams would: who's Harry Potter? ;)

I'm going to throw you a few clues, since, notwithstanding the large volume of PMs I've received on this question, I haven't quite gotten the answer.

For one, Minerva is not the answer. She is a goddess. Besides, did you think I was going to give you something that easy? :P

Two: perhaps this was a bit too nuanced of a question on my part. When I said "god of the Roman pantheon," that is to say exclusively of the Roman pantheon. A lot of you guessed Mars or Vulcan, but they have Greek counterparts who largely informed their characterization. I'm actually quite impressed by the connection Idol made to Vulcan vis-a-vis Mulciber, one of Vulcan's lesser known names, for I was unaware that there is a character in the Harry Potter series named Mulciber. All I guess this goes to show is that J.K.R. aced mythology and, given her literary output, flunked creative writing.

Three: as stated before, one of you gave me the correct character in the book series but not the god. If you've already submitted an answer to me and it was a Harry Potter character, try resubmitting an answer with the god instead. You might be more fortunate. ;)

Four: check your local Roman countryside hills for the name of this god. He's also kind of two-faced, which, if you know your Potter, should be a dead giveaway.

That was quite a giveaway Cael.

If I'm right, you Harry Potter fans should feel ashamed. I don't know squat about any aspect of the books.

...a Name Tag!

Wasn't that a challenge? Up until the part where I all but told you guys what to look for on Google, anyway. Today's winners are mwjhnsn, VP-77, and Honorbound, who, for winning today's episode of Name That God, win Name Tags! The reason I'm handing out three is that mwjhnsn came up with the name of the character well before anyone else but didn't give me the god's name. Honorbound gave me the name Janus, which is adequately close. VP finally gave me the name I sought: Quirinus.

Quirinus is the name I wanted to hear. Unique to the Roman pantheon (inasmuch as that was possible back then, for many gods drew counterparts in the classical era), Quirinus started off as an early god of the Roman state and was later tacked on to the two-headed god of doors and change, Janus around the Augustan Age. This connection to two-headed Janus explains the name of Professor Quirinus Quirrell in the Harry Potter series, who had one normal face and the face of Lord Voldemort on other side of his head. Quirinus also lent his name to the Quirinal, one of the 7 Hills of Rome. Now, I know what you're thinking. The answer is yes, you should talk about this at parties! Whenever someone in the room sounds like a know-it-all, steal their thunder by talking about Quirinus-related trivia! No longer will you be glowering in the corner as people hog all the attention by discussing Chipotle like that's actually food! Confound and amaze your audience by talking about how Janus inspired the name January, the month we're in right now because I thought ahead and slated this particular question for the First of January! I guarantee you that people will back away from you because they are completely awe-struck by your intellect, your dashing good looks, and your charm! They will be dumbstruck by your bottomless well of knowledge!

That's what I tell myself when people silently walk away from me at parties as I expound on how the Minotaur was born, at any rate.

And so begins the new year and the eighth day! Here's a good one that doesn't require much thought at all: get the most dominations today, New Year's Day, as a Medic. Line up those screenshots of your Medic dominations (assists count) on our servers so you, too, can appreciate just how thankless that position is!

That was quite a giveaway Cael.

If I'm right, you Harry Potter fans should feel ashamed. I don't know squat about any aspect of the books.

Don't be silly. Harry Potter fans should feel ashamed at all times of their lives. It was the book series for vacuous pre-teens until Twilight made it big.

But, but, I really like Harry Potter. I think they're well written (and this comes from the fellow who read and understood the Count of Monte Cristo at the age of eight).

Redacted. I don't wanna be the guy who steals Caelmas 8(

Since when can the medic use the frying pan?

/me likes!

Also, VP. For hating that class, you seem to have an aweful lot of dominations… Are all those from today?

...a Bonesaw!

What? All that work for a lousy Bonesaw? It's not just any Bonesaw, though: it's Strange, like getting mustard mailed to your house! Congratulate mwjhnsn for his pan-tastic medical skills today! I hope you've come to appreciate that class for what it is: a lot of work with disproportionately little sympathy. Reminds me a lot of being an Advisor.

So here we are on the ninth day, and what's in store for you now? Finally, something straightforward: most dominations on Control Points Rotation. This is one I know all of you can do. Best of all, it doesn't involve me getting up to thirty PMs in a single day! Go forth, cap points, and remember to check your corners and sixes!
