Tips and learning idea

Call in chuck norris.........ummm i think the most important on game playing is your reaction...=D

As this thread is in the private forum of The Raiders, our ability to update it is coming to an end with the pending changes. Thanks for those who contributed to it and to those who were working with me to update it further. We provided some great information for our house "The Raiders".

I have seen similar threads in the general forum where you can still post tips etc. and/or start a new thread available to everyone from all houses. I have been told by other house members that they too have had training, or tips threads. They are going to experience the same changes unless it is run by their leaders.

I have considered trying to post tips to our house leaders and have them update or start a new thread, but I think this might be contrary to what EdgeGamers is trying to accomplish with the upcoming changes. Just another 2-cents from me.

See you in battle!

That is a great idea! There are so many that we have not even touched on yet!

It seems that this private forum will only be locked down temporarily and will be reopened in the not too distant future.

Some of us are working on recording demo's for training (you need a friend for that), and then posting it on you tube. Then we can post the link in here. Maybe you have a better idea on how to do this? Let us know...

You can always try to text the information too.

To make training videos, it has been suggested to record the demo, play the demo back while recording with a digital camera, then putting it on you tube.

Training videos could help a lot here. I hope we can find a better method...

@Bones... well, right now I can't do the video yet since I'm kind of too busy for my undergrad stuff... maybe the next term break in December I can.... but I think I could write down the guide now :D

HOW TO RAMBO MG42

//Note: This is for pure fun only. It is not intended to be used tactically or for n00bs, this is not suited for you.

History: For me, I thought of ramboing after I played the Medal of Honor Airborne where that Axis uses a hand-held MG42. He was kicking butt as he can mow down everyone. When you get hit, it will only take 0.5 seconds for you to go down on Expert Mode if you get hit.

So, when I got to DoD:s, I figured out if I can do the same on the MG42. At first, it was a little bit awkward as the high recoil of the gun is far too high. Then, an Idea came across and made my job easier. Some think that I'm actually deploying mg MG in the Air. Others think that I am haxing... If you're reading this guide, then probably, you'll find it very simple.

Procedure: You need to have a bind keys. One for your default config and one for the High-Sensitivity config. For me, I binded my x key for "sensitivity 3" and for my [ key is "sensitivity 20". In that way you shouldn't worry about typing in the console again to revert sensitivities. Sensitivity 20 might sound crazy but the only way you can fight the recoil of the gun is to heighten your sensitivity. When you fire, you must move down your mouse just like other weapons. However, constant fire means constant moving down of the mouse. Crouching also helps reduce the recoil As you can pull the mouse down easier than when standing up. If you choose to prone. It's hard already to rambo. Deploy your MG42 then...

Tactical usage: When you rambo, Keep in mind that you also drain stamina when you fire meaning you slow down and you don't get a time to strafe. So the only compensation for this one is to point the gun at the enemy and spray or crouching. And since the gun has no crossair, you have to find a way to guide the gun towards your enemy. When you want to reload, you have to deploy your MG.Be careful also of overheating. You can't really take down targets anything farther than the medium range. You might also have a hard time killing targets in prone so be careful of that.

Do not even think about killing snipers and Deployed MG unless you managed to sneak on the back of them. You have a chance against a rocket if you managed to make his initial rocket attack missed. Then rush to him and gun him down as he will either pannic or draw out his carbine or C96 as he will not probably expect you'll rambo him (but if he is reading this, now he knows). Be careful also of rifflemen as you would have a hard time ramboing because of their oneshot (kar98) or twoshot (m1) killing style. However, if you get close, then their weapons are useless as you would probably mow them down first before they fire their weapon. Assault and Support class are said the same. If you managed to surprise them or get in their back, then they'll die first. This gun is also suitable for some intense firefight especially when the enemy is in confusion. You can mow them down while they are running infront, not noticing you. Just be careful and try to move away after you get a kill. Don't fight when there is smoke, you'll never know if you're already firing the air.

I personally recommend this gun as a support/assault role but only when assaulting it at least helps your teamates take down enemies whithin your close range. If you suddenly need to take down long range enemies, then better deploy act as an MG class now and deploy the MG rather than being a support or assault.

I think this is just a first half. I'm still working on the 30cal though. But I noticed on the 30cal is that I can kill at farther targets than MG42 :D

Bones started this thread in the Raiders Private forum. It is time to make it Public. Thank you Bones.
Note: moving this thread to the public forums was one of my last acts as a Raiders House Advisor. The houses are gone but DoD goes on!

Learn the conventional names for the map locations. You can find them here. Once you know the names use them to communicate. e.g. "They are rushing bench alley!"
When you hear that you should help out with defending bench alley.

It's all about communication and mutual support. To be effective you have to know the maps.

For sniping i would say duck if they zoom in on you first because sometimes they will over shoot you use q to quick switch and just try and hit them before they can hit you and i dont really aim i just move my mouse to where they are as fast as i can and shoot and sometimes i miss sometimes i dont:)

Sprinting

I am sure there are other opinions on sprinting, so please understand this is based on my experience with it.

One of the dangers about sprinting is that you can run out of steam in the open where you are an easy target. I often sprint when crossing a street toward a safe location in order to reduce the chance of being sniped. Sometimes I stagger my sprinting if I have to go a longer distance in the open.

A good sniper who has a good idea of where I am going can still lead the shot and nail me. To mix this up, sometimes I try sprinting in a ZigZag pattern, or sprint at an angle away from them instead of toward them when crossing a street.

Another problem about sprinting is that you can?t fire your weapon when sprinting. I have been caught sprinting while trying to fire and guess what ? then gun won?t fire.

The problem gets worse. I have been caught more than a few times on this one. If you sprint and try to switch to shooting just before you release the sprint key, the gun won?t fire. Now you are in a bad situation. You still have the fire key pressed as you release the sprint key ? still the gun won?t fire. You now have to toggle the fire key to get the gun to shoot, but you did not realize this at a critical time. I have sprinted across a street into a building only to find the bad guy inside. I try to press my fire button and unfortunately I did this before letting go of the sprint. I find myself caught trying to shoot the guy, dodge his bullets, my gun not working, and then find my self waiting to respawn. The lesson here is, you have to release that sprint key before pressing the fire key, or you can get in a world of trouble.

Sprinting can be a life saver, but it can also get you killed.

Sprinting extra...

One thing I fogot to mention about sprinting:

When you run out of steam after sprinting, you begin to move very slowly till you catch your breath. You don't recover untill you stop movement. If you stand still for a short while you will recover and can move normally again. Tip: You can recover much faster if you crouch or go prone at that time.

Assault Class (Thompson and MP40)

Using the Assault Class can be a great choice for the novice and the experienced alike for different reasons. It is often called a spray and pray weapon. There is little kick when shooting. You can fire several shots while you are moving and still easily shoot in the general direction you want. You are given 1 explosive grenade and 1 smoke grenade. You get a pistol. You can also punch.

The spread is not accurate, so this is not a gun to use at medium and long distances. I have had lucky breaks where I can hit someone at about 50 yards, and unluckily miss someone at about 20 yards. Many people have moderate success at using this in closer ranges with lots of movement. It is a great weapon to learn how to strafe – moving sideways while trying to fire in the same direction. It takes a few hits to kill someone with full health. More on this in a future tip (any volunteers?)

The explosive and smoke grenades give you the tools to get into or past some tough areas. The grenades have a 5 second timer from the moment you activate them and can damage or take out several people at once. The smoke grenade can hide you, your team mates, and even confuse and confound your enemy. Unfortunately, both grenade types can cause your team mates a lot of grief too. More on this in a future tip (any volunteers?).

Punching is easily done without having to switch weapons. This is obviously a close range action. It takes 2 to 3 punches to take down someone with full health. You also get a lot of points when you punch vs. using a weapon requiring ammunition. There are good and bad points about punching. More on this in a future tip (any volunteers?).

The pistol requires switching weapons. It is a great short range weapon with relatively good accuracy. It is given as a secondary weapon with other primary weapons. There are fewer shots per clip, but it reloads faster than most guns. More on this in a future tip (any volunteers?).

So you can see that the Assault Class provides a descent collection of weapons at your disposal. Each of the weapon classes can be used in several ways, but they are also by design best suited for certain types of actions. There are some advanced players who can use other weapons (e.g. sniper and rifle) for assault, but for most people this class is a descent choice for run and gun action. The Assault Class gets its name for a reason. You can get a better feel for the advantages and disadvantages of this weapon class if you use this for a while and then try applying similar tactics with another weapon class.

I encourage you to offer your experience on this as novice or expert. Some things work for some people and other things work for other people.

Support (BAR and STG44)

Support

Support is most effective when used as an overloaded version of the Assault class. In a pinch when properly placed and prone they can act like a machine gun until a machine gun moves up and get's in place. The STG44 comes with big clips. The BAR comes with lot's of little clips and is harder to use for area denial because of the more frequent reloading. Do not forget to give ammo (usually the H key) to machine gun and rocket classes.

The support weapons, BAR and STG44 have a nasty kick which can be compensated for slightly by crouching and greatly by going prone. You are slower and quieter when you crouch. You are also quiet when you go prone and crawl. You cannot fire when crawling. When prone you present a much smaller target but are more vulnerable to melee attacks (knife, shovel, fist, gun butt).

You are very vulnerable when changing from upright to prone or prone to upright because you can not fire at this time. I used to die frequently when dropping to prone to decrease the recoil effect. Now I spend more time crouching.

When using support weapons pull back on the mouse as you fire to keep on target and fire in short bursts. You can also fire at their feet and let the recoil walk the shots up to their head. It takes practice.

The alternate fire button (usually the right mouse button) switches between automatic and single shot mode. You need at least two hits to kill an enemy at full health unless you manage a head shot and support rifles aren't as accurate as the other rifles but they are more accurate than submachine guns. The benifit of single shot mode is it conserves ammo and the recoil is less of an issue.

You get two fragmentation (frag) grenades as a support player. If you hold down the mouse button for three seconds and then let it go you are priming the grenade and it will go off two seconds later. This is great for getting the guys who run up to grenades that have been thrown, and pick them up using the "use" key, and throw them back. The downside is you're standing there without your rifle for three seconds. Grenades don't have to be thrown. They can be dropped using the alternate fire button. All grenades, frag, rifle and smoke, show up on the map so it's hard to surprise people with them. (Moral: keep one eye on the mini map.)

One nice thing about grenades is that they bounce off of walls so you can send them around corners. Be careful throwing grenades over buildings. There is an invisable ceiling that will bounce the grenade back at you in some places. e.g. There are spots in the field on Donner that you can throw over the building from South to North on the West side of field, but if you try to throw over the same building when standing at the South end of connector be prepared to eat your own grenade.

This thread was last added to in January of 09. I think it is high time some of the current generation of DoD players share their thoughts with us.

For those of you who would lock this as a necro thread I ask that you leave it alone and read this.
