Thoughts on the Black Mesa Map on the CP Rotation server

I remember when I struggled to learn the map when I first played it. Its one of those maps you have to get used to. Also my friend made a Survival guide on Mesa awhile back that you can find here.

Yawn, seems more then a few GO think it's the cat's pajamas. I'm not one of them.
It's a OK map, nothing more & I can not count the times that I've been in the CP server since it's addition to the rotation & watch Black Mesa basically clear the server out. Certainly don't think it helps the server any.

I have had it fill over half way in 15 minutes with pubs before.

The map is actually deceptively straightforward. You can go to the left, towards the enemy base, or to the right, towards the points you need to capture. The vents give you a circuitous route that lets you get behind enemy lines, with the downfall that they are cramped and easy to trap people in. All things considered, it is fairly linear, especially much more so than something like Steel.

I had never been on the map until a Black Mesa Sunday. I found it confusing, but enticing. I find myself wanting to play it more just to learn more about it. But I don't think it would draw me to the CP rotation server alone.

Same with me. It can be really scary and confusing to anyone who's new to the map thanks to the vents, one-way-doors, the acid and so on, but if you give yourself time to learn how the map works and then get some people there who also know you'll end up having the time of your life!

It's also probably the only map I can honestly say that is balanced for all classes. You can do a class rush and win.

It's not really hurting the server. Of course if the server is full of Negative Nancy's who simply can't wrap their heads around playing on Blackmesa, of course the server will die. Also it's a fact that you can lose up to half of the people on any server when there's a map change. Some people are just done playing at that point or just wanted to play on one specific map. It would be a whole different story if a full server joined Blackmesa, played for a few minutes and then everyone rage quits. I haven't had that happen to this day.

As far as design goes, it's kinda bad. Chokey. Point A has tons of visibility and little cover.

It's great to mess around on.

I'd rather not go into a long post about the history of Mesa and when it used to be a 32/32 server that was full all the time. Just know that there were many regulars and that the map held certain memories for those regulars.

It only doesn't help because Quickplay doesn't like custom maps. Bet if it allowed custom maps, then so many regulars would be on there like it used to be. Only reason Mesa doesn't fill is because regulars can't find the server when it runs Mesa.

Agreed, plus im good with the vents :w00t:

Blackmesa is and will always be my favorite map.
I think it is well balanced, but to the point where the game becomes an endless tug of war for the middle point which gives in for long and extremely fun matches. It is also the reason of why I joined eGO, the Black Mesa Server (R.I.P) I remember spending hours playing there and nothing else. I remember when Iron Horse would just camp there all day and when a lot of old and some now gone eGO members would play on it all day and just have a blast, but that was before the server was moved and playercount went from a steady 32/32 to a less than 16/32 to 0/32.
In my opinion, the map really fits TF2 and I wouldn't think it'd fit CS more(Probably for Team Deathmatch it would) You can always do alright no matter what class you are, however the map is not really good for a rotation as the matches tend to be really long and not so straightforward for the objectives.
But anyways that's what I think of this wonderful map that was once the essence of eGO and now it's just a shadow hanging over CP rotation.
