My Pinktoe. It's not broken, it's just special . It's sitting on the side and the bottom at the same time. This is a friendly little guy. He loves have his rump pet. Pushes it into the air like a cat. He's my pal.

My wife used to have an irrational fear of spiders. She was, strangely enough, the one who got me my first tarantula. Fast forward a few years and we get her one too. Then we get a dozen plus more. Now she's not scared of regular spiders either. I can understand some being extra cautious around widows, recluses, Sydney funnel web, etc..., but most of these guys are pretty docile. Most aren't that venomous either, and if you're not allergic, won't be very painful either if bitten. A few, well, can make the next few days of your life suck. And of those only one or two are aggressive.

It's a fun hobby. We have enough of them now, where at least one of them is doing something interesting at some point. If we get board we bust out the laser pointer and watch the frogs or gecko go to town.

I (personally) classify them into three groups; Docile, Skittish and Dangerous. Although, do not take 'dangerous' to mean deadly. If you're allergic, then you might have issues, like with bee stings.

The docile ones, are just that, calm, non-aggressive.
Skittish, they're fast, and may hurt themselves if you're not careful (although being careful is par for the course with any of them).

Dangerous, their bite/venom is worse then the others. Some are like a bee or a wasp, others will give you sweats, nausea, heart palpitations, cramping, pain, etc...

Some are a mix. My pokie is skittish and I wouldn't wanna get bit by him (man are they majestic though, I'd love to see him 'out and about'). Our Avics are docile, but prone to "leaping for freedom", and a 3 foot+ fall could crack them like an egg. Our OBT can be aggressive, as in it doesn't flee and it hits a threat pose with little provocation. It's also another whose bite you will remember. We have a few that we can handle regularly and some I don't really want to handle unless necessary. Although, at some point, I'd like to handle them all at least once.

If one got out? Well, if our cat doesn't get it, the trail of web they leave behind might be helpful. That's a road I'll cross when (IF) the time comes. They're like any other bug in that respect. They'd be looking for shelter and then food.

Hehe, that's my little N. Chromatus. It'll get bigger, about 5-6"s and bulky. It's not one of the "dangerous" ones. Basically, there's two regions for these guys, New World, and Old World. New world is form here and south/central America and Old World are from pretty much everywhere else, Africa, Asia, etc... Now generally speaking, the Old World tarantulas are more venomous then the New World ones. Most of the new world species have hairs that they can flick on a predator, which is usually its first line of defense. The Old World guys don't have these hairs and therefor will, if they can't run away, more easily throw up a threat pose and also possess a stronger venom.
