I suck at it, but I still enjoy it. The only map I've made so far is a remake for the Dueling Keeps map from Quake 3, but it still has bugs that need working out. and I need to redo the spawn room but I'm too lazy at the moment. If I ever finish it I'll post it here (among other places) for any of you who have Quake 3 nostalgia to try.

Anyone else here in to mapping?

Yeah i love mapping 8) , although i'm just starting to learn a few advanced things. currently im trying to make a map that incorporates the payload style of pushing a cart through the map, with control points that force the blue team to capture them to open a gate for the bomb to go through. I personally think that the maps going good so far, but i haven't had any real testing done on it for balancing so i don't know. Might turn out crappy. :((

I stopped mapping because I got bored of it, however it was fun when I was doing it. I still know a fair bit so if you get stuck, send me a pm, i'll be sure to help you within 12 hours or so (very latest).

i never tried mapping on my part. but i always wanted too cause i think it would be fun. and goodluck with your level you are making

Some of us map here in EGO - i wish we had a dedicated thread for it

I'm currently about to pop out the last beta version of blackmesa. If you need help just give me a call

~D

I have a couple of fantastic (I think) ideas, but with the four kids, the wife, and the full-time job, it's a wonder I can get in a few hours of playing, let along mapping every week.

I love mapping. Mapping gets easier with more practice. :)

If you need help just ask me. 8)

I was looking to get into mapping but i dont know any programs to use for this. Could you guys throw out some links to useful stuff?

I'm trying to map right now. I've finally figured out earlier issues of my spawning problems, but It's going fine, now. I just need to learn all the textures and ways to tweak stuff. Yes, I'm a nub, but it's neat, and I'm trying to make a remake of a TFC map.

Could a custom map one of us makes possibly make its way to one of the eGO events? !shy It would be pretty cool if I could get my map on there. 8)

I map for all the source games even zombie master (not the css mod, but i do that one too) and synergy mods

its my canvas in which i paint on

[/quote1212055307]You just use hammer, you download the Source SDK from Steam and Hammer is included in it.

Bearing in mind you must own Half-Life 2, otherwise you can not download the Source SDK, but I'm sure you already have Half-Life 2 :P

Make sure when you start mapping, start simple, don't have massive ideas and say after using hammer for 20 mins "I'm going to make an awesome mod", really, it won't work - modding takes a lot of time, practise and skill. Become competent at mapping, maybe join a small scale mod and do one or two maps for them, start to make a name for yourself. I'm not trying to be a downer, but please, trust me =)

Good luck to all mappers.

I'm currently working on Half Life 2 Singleplayer levels, Its the same as mapping but with much more scripting,

I do plan to start trying to make TF 2 Maps, but I'm concentrating on these single player levels for now

some more mapping resources:

moddb.com
fpsbanana.com
dod-federation.com ( i think) has lots of models to use for source games like dods, css, and hl2s

check the steam forums for more models

btw: any map on Ubuntu, i was thinking of trying to use linux, but dont know how it is for what I want to do.

That's the way to go, practise with single player and once you've got that down pat, jump to multi player. Good luck :D

I've got a small project underway right now for TF2. I've mapped for Call of Duty for over 2 years, and I've just started to get into Hammer. It is much easier once you get used to the interface.

Hey Blahman thanks for putting that optimazation guide there, it's really going to help me out alot :)
