A few here in Southern Cali, but up north I hope will stay the most memorable.
1989. World series was going on. Was on my way home from the "Navy Exchange" on Treasure Island Naval station, San Francisco Ca. to watch the game.
The man made island my dad was stationed on was connected to Yerba Buena Island which connects the Oakland side of the Bay Bridge to the San Francisco side.
When it struck, I was walking out the door and the frame shook left to right enough to hit me on the shoulder as I walked through with glass shattering. In 89 alot of the base was still under construction so there was a huge field across from the Exchange to just run out into the open and take cover? Seriously nothing to do but ride it out.
After what seemed like a few minutes it was calm but you could see smoke, hear helicopters going to the bridge and everywhere, hear Sirens going off for the Coast Guard who had a base on the island.
I heard a segment of the top side of the Oakland side of the bride collapse onto it self and in the distance which I thought was an echo I heard the Cypress freeway collapsing. I got on my BMX and on the way home I saw a huge crack in the island 4ft deep 2 1/2 ft wide and over 10ft long.
My family was cool. No power, no flooding, no gas leaks, no damage to the house. MPs driving by saying to conserve water, no cells.. sorta, only radio... pagers. People freaking out over lit candles and a "TSUNAMI". It was chaos. The craziest part, it started to get dark quick and the only light when you looked across the bay from Treasure Island (sea level a few miles across) was the Marina district on fire.
Its rare you see the city and the landmarks turned OFF and illuminated by a blaze. Made me think of the 1906 quake.
They shut down the bridge for months. They had Ferry Boats to take people from one side of the bay to the other. Treasure Island (TI) to San Francisco port to meet friends and over to Alameda base to see the carrier fleet was nice, but alot of the city was never the same.
