Boys Banned From Violent Videogames After Nuking Cat...

Did you guys even read the article:

"According to court ordered psychological assessments, video games were NOT found to have directly encouraged the boys' actions. But barring their access to such games was nonetheless a recommendation put forward in the assessments."

It is just punishment for what they did without having to face any jail time, it's like forbidding a kid from eating candy when he misbehaves, just because kids like candy.

Instead of jail time they get:

- No video games
- One year probation
- 100 hours community service.
- Therapy
- Pay $250 restitution money each
- Curfew

MY VERDICT:

This specific ruling looks ambiguous to me because the judge could have said no movies for a month or no TV for a month, but since he knows kids like video games he hurts them where it hurts the most....video games.

Thanks for pointing that out R.E.D, good to hear everyones insight/point of view on this situation. *thumbs up*

Well in my opinion I feel the kids should be stuffed into a microwave and nuked for doing something so stupid, but that is just me...

Seriously? i mean lets not get crazy. its was just an animal. a cat. Now i own a cat, and a dog, and there are several wild cats that i feed on my property, and i do agree that what they did was seriously screwed up. but seriously? Nuke a kid? i understand the direction of your anger. but unless you are a pure vegan then how can you be so mad about this? have you ever seen how they process your Micky-D's Hamburger?

I dont eat meat and have never eaten anything at mc donalds... But my philosophy is to do unto others as you would have done unto yourself. If you don't want to be stuffed in a microwave and cooked then why would you do it to someone else, someone who never did anything to you by the way...

All i'm saying is: Cruelty to animals is wrong, and i agree do unto others. So, the owners of the cats should be allowed to put those kids cat in their microwave.

that was a joke.

but i still think that a punishment should be issued, a lesson learned. and thats it. i do not think they should be put in a microwave. ;)

An animal is a living being. When you hurt it, it will scream, it will bleed, it will feel terror - just like you.

It's not just a "thing".

However, killing an animal should not carry a stiff penalty - such as death. My opinion, hurting living creatures deserves an evaluation of the person's sanity & stability.

A disregard for life can take a step up to another level. It's a flaw, it can be fixed. All this punishment's going to accomplish - is making them hide better and not get caught next time. It should be more on the therapy, psychoanalysis, observation side. The bulk is punishment - I don't think punishment like that will be very effective on a kid - it's just going to tick them off.

[side note] I was searching on google for a link to one of the many articles on the subject - lo and behold the first one that came up was PETA. IMO, PETA is the most unreliable source for any information you could possibly have. Why?

http://www.petakillsanimals.com/ - PETA - they're huge hypocrites.

Don't get my stance wrong. I'm no vegetarian, but I am absolutely NOT willing to support any kind of brutality to animals ( from pets, to farm animals, to animals who are about to get slaughtered.) Only a weak coward will beat/hurt/senselessly kill animals. It's low, and it's wrong.

i was allowed to watch violent movies, and play violent games as far back as i can remember, and i never did anything violent against anyone unnecessarily. but i did have a good mom, who taught me right and wrong, and the consequences of doing wrong.

Now, do I need to ask you why you think you've turned out to be a decent person? How about if you asked me? What do you think I'd say ... maybe the same thing you just said. I bet you if you asked ANYONE who you think is a good person - they're going to say the same ... exact ... thing. My mom, My dad, etc. They had a family looking out to make sure they were going about things right.

What you just said up there - that's not common these days.

Man, even if I look at myself ... if I had a kid now, I don't think I'd be a good parent. Old as I am, I still don't view myself as mature enough to be a good role model. :|

So stupid, I'd love to know how by playing video games, this would make you pick up a cat and put it in a microwave.

If the goverment ever did ban games in US and Canada.. I can guarantee everyone that there would be rapid climb in crime rate no one wants to admit it but Games are now apart of our lifes and is a must to maintain order, control anger, hate, murderous tentions ect ect (Well non gamers wont admit we need games)

If games were banned when I was young, I would most likly be in some gang getting my fix on "fun" or be dead.

So games FTW!

Ps. As for the cat thing, the kid was brought up wrong parents did'nt do there job its there fault not games, thats like playing baseball and you hit the ball to far and smashs into a window and when someone starts asking who did it and you say "Well I hit the ball but it was the winds fault for being so windly today" (No it's your fault for playing in a city street you know better wind had nothing to do with it)

Future serial killers, this is how it all starts, first a cat, then a whole bunch of people:(

I have done 3 research studies in college so far on people vs violence in video games. I have looked at MANY studies, there is not a clear line of yes or no for these types of causes and effects. Some studies show an outcome of yes video games to cause more violence. Heres the turn around, theres some that have the outcome of no they do not cause more violence. There is no definate answer as of this time.

The best practice to prevent these violent acts is better parenting skills as the number one. Two would be to reform current warning labels/laws/policies to fit the general public, parents, and under age kids. Three would be to make sure there are penalties to not enforcing these laws or policies.(ex: sell beer to a minor-well yer goin to get arrested for that when your caught)

My side notes of opinion- I think parents(guardians) are the majority(95%) factor in every single incident that has happened, when it involves their kids. That remaining 5% is because I think theres just BAD kids out there with or without the proper parenting. People selling video games are not properly going by ESRB guidelines on selling the games to the proper age group. Game makers are using their freedoms to create a potential risk knowingly they are partly responsible for these happenings.

Do you know, research studies out of educational institutions are sometimes raised up an lauded for their work & findings?

I suggest you talk to a psych professor AND your department about independent research credits. Find someone to partner up with - and make a top-notch publishable paper. You can use one of your completed papers as a base. (Seriously. Just tell them you're using it beforehand with the goal of expanding it and maybe publishing it if a publisher accepts - go for one of the industry and/or psych journals. Your chances will be good. Be certain to look at their writing style before you work on the project. )

[ I did the same kind of research on Javascript back in the late 90's. ;) Every single vulnerability that I found was true. Even down to the method I used to confirm my vulnerabilities - are part of current datamining techniques ... also considered privacy invasion. ]

So does this mean because I constantly play ames and are only 14 that Im gonna go out and beat the crap out of budgies? Well maybe.. but thats me... :P:P nah really why?

What about violent shows/television etc. ?

I say TV cause there have been some cartoons where they put a cat in the microwave and it gets electrocuted but still lives...

I haven't heard nor seen a video game that deals with putting a cat in a microwave

Stupid people, like Beta said "stupidity can't be fixed". These guys are morons, and why blame video games, if you can't find any evidence, they were not properly supervised and was raised poorly or raised at a golden egg, doing anything he could do until he grew up.

LOL Cr@sh! 4chan.... Taking stupdity to a whole new level!

I usually blame those cartoon kids are right now watching in nicktoons, nickoloden, and cartoon network.

Example: The adventures of grim, billy and mandy... Good cartoon, but was not meant to re-act in real life!
