I switched back to xp now and the shutdown time is uber slow. Is there any tweak/red change i can do to kill processes or make it go faster.

Also does anyone know any good xp tweaks? :)

One thing you can do to speedup the shutdown is to avoid having so many processes start in the first place. This is probably more useful for startup, but it might help shutdown as well.

1. Go to start -> Run...
2. type "msconfig" (no quotes) and press enter
3. Go to the startup tab (I think that's what it's called) and uncheck programs that you don't need starting. For example, I don't need iTunes stuff starting, I don't need Quicktime crap starting, I don't need Adobe Reader stuff starting, etc.
4. Save, reboot, and when it boots up again and gives you a message warning you that the system has been changed, click the checkbox that says not to alert you anymore.

If it's taking a really long time to shutdown, perhaps some process is hanging or something. I don't know, but the above info is at least one tweak you can make to speed it up. You might also look at increasing the size of your virtual memory as well. Not sure that either one will help shutdown speeds, but should improve performance in general.

P.S. Your sig says "Windows Vista RULES" but you're saying that you have reinstalled XP? ROFL!

thanks man thats helped on startup :)

i googld it (like i should have.) and this is what i got

lol yeah.... about that. Okay i have a kick bootie system, i can run crysis and play a couple movies. but vista sucks! Everytime i watch a movie it will freeze if i go to a website with a fair amount pictures. It shouldn't do that. Now that i'm back at xp it runs awesome.

I really need to try vista now haha, xp is not the same anymore

What, don't tell me you're running XP and you miss saying "Windows Sucks?" XD

You'll start posting "Windows Sucks!" all over the place if you start running Vista.

Crippling software ( RAM LIMIT ) - a surefire way to FORCE people to "switch" to the latest resource suck.

Sigh ...

I wish Linux had better support for games.

Because I'm sick of Windows ... since Windows 3.11. I miss living in the command prompt. With DOS - your comp booted faster than you could blow a fart.

Really, the only Windows version I ever liked - was Windows 2000 Pro.

It was actually good. It actually HURT to switch over to XP from a system that ran so nicely.

No, it shouldn't. Could you please describe this "kick bootie" system? This is intruiging me.

Wow Lihualee...that's a great way to get yourself into trouble :-P

Slusserjon, one thing you can do is edit the registry to tell Windows how long it should wait before shutting down a process. You can find the registry tweak here.

Here are another few suggestions - please note that your experience with any of these may differ from what's written as your system is different. Have fun tweaking!

My vista shutsdown within like 2 seconds. Right when I click on shutdown the screen flashes and boom its down.

Here is a registry tweak you can try work fine for me.

****But before you make any changes to your registry you should always make a backup ****

Start Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
Click on the "Control" Folder.
Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it to a value lower than 2000, say 1000 as a test.

The WaitToKillServiceTimeout setting basically is the amount of time Windows gives a process to shutdown before Windows forces it to shutdown

Pulling the cord is actually worse for the HD because the R/W head is not back into the default position. RAM still saves info with no power. Trust me, RAM does not lose all its info with no power. It degrades over time, in some cases if you freeze the ram it won't start to degrade untill 10 mins later.

To add to the tech help. A new install of windows will aways be the fastest it can be untill you start adding components to it. Virus scans, adobe products, quicktime,IMs,auto updating programs will all slow your computer on boot and shutdown. I personaly don't care about a slow shutdown computer because I have mine set to delete virtual memory everytime. Thats nothing compared to shutting down a windows server 2003 with AD and several hundred users and other server services running. Can you say 25min- an hour just to shutdown?

Boot into save mode, write down the processes. Boot into regular mode kill all processes that arn't listed untill something crashes, then add to the list. Your list will then contain what processes are needed for a stable regular boot to function. you dont need the print spool to run unless your needing to print. most of what you kill can be started back up in the services mmc. (start, run, services.msc) the less you have started before the shutdown the less the system has to turn off to begin with on shutdown. you will get errors in your event viewer everytime you shutoff a process in ram, because it is told to record that type of action.

True but I wouldn't get your hopes up of pulling info out of RAM if your computer crashes. RAM is volatile storage, so it loses its information when power is disconnected. Most computers refresh the values in RAM several times every second to keep it from losing the information. It's true that under certain conditions it can hold a charge for several seconds or minutes, but it's not a good idea to count on that happening. Save your data to the hard drive before you pull the plug. :)

RAM doesn't lose all of it's information the moment that you unplug/shutdown. There was some news about TrueCrypt volumes being potentially threatened if a hacker had physical access to your computer, a can of Dust-Off (or whatever), and some liquid nitrogen.

Srsly, who has that?

Yes, I conceded that point in my post as well. I'm just saying don't hope (in general) that RAM will save everything if the power is disconnected.

You mean you DON'T have liquid nitrogen just lying around the house? :D
