Ah, I've been playing it. It's a great game. It's dragged down by one fricken' problem though. SecuROM. I reformat my computer every 3 months, so what does this mean for me? I will have to reactivate it in less than a year most likely. Ugh.
On the bright side, it is a great game, and I am impressed by the engine. I was expecting the engine to be as horribly programmed as the CrySis engine- on my computer, I can't even run it on the lowest settings without a bad framerate. The CrySis engine may look good, but if it can't run the game properly it is a bad engine. I clicked 'optimal' in FarCry 2, and almost all the settings except fire, shadow, physics and anti-aliasing snapped to 'very high.' I thought maybe it was just trying to be nice- but the game ran at 50 fps average. The engine knows how to look good and play good, even on my measly 4 year old computer. This was the first step in the right direction. Then, I got my first flamethrower. Oh HELL YEAH! I really wanted to use a different adjective there, but I'd be banned for it.
I do wonder why its called FarCry 2 though, as it doesn't feel like #1 and it doesn't follow its story or characters. The only reason I can think of the game being called #2 is because they wanted to ensure its success instead of investing in a new I.P. If this is true, I think they failed to realize that if a new game is great- it will sell even if it is a new IP. In fact, it will sell better if a great game that is truly a standalone and new game and starts a new IP because it will attract a larger audience. Calling it Far Cry 2 risks alienating people who didn't like #1 and may piss off 'purists.' The only other reason I can think of is if they are using the name as a metaphor This game is a far cry from home. Even then, maybe the name Far Cry: Africa would've fit better than a sequel moniker.
Eh, enough nitpicking, it doesn't affect the actual gameplay. (Which is awesome)
In response to mustachio; I have had no problems with the ATI drivers. In fact I never understood why everyone complains about their drivers! I have found them much easier than that horrid nVidia card I had once. Plus, my ATI cards have always served me right. The one nVidia card I bought was just so awful that it made me stay away from nVidia like the plague. It was just the worst chip I ever put in my computer, and everyone raved about it and told me 'mine was fine' when they tinkered with it, so that impression was bad enough to leave a black mark on nVidia for me.
