Ad Problems - Possible virus?

My problem has been solved. I did a reformat.

I was playing garry's mod today, and a server Rob and a few other eGO's were on required that I download 1100 files.

Ever since, or maybe before, I have been experiencing Ad's and pop-ups. Mozilla Firefox is what I use, and even surfing the edgegamers.org site Mozilla opens another page on it's own, and something about "Anti-Virus 2008!" comes up on that window.

Suggest some programs, I currently use Norton 360 yet ironically, I cannot get it to open and it is not starting upon boot like it normally does.

I am getting kind of scared here..I have not downloaded anything other than this. Yet, accordingly, Rob says that game files cannot contain viruses.

Another thing: When Gmod crashed while playing it, my computer was VERY VERY slow for the next 10 minutes or so. After about 5 minutes, I get a message saying "Error - rapidshare/<bunchofnumbershere> cannot download."

I have since deleted my garrysmod folder and the game via steam. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also, the ad pops-up every 10 minutes or so. It is not something that is constantly annoying me.
 
You've actually contracted a particularly difficult piece of malware. I've had the most removing it with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Just download and install the software. After installed reboot into safe mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and perform a full scan with the software. Then, perform all of the recommended repairs and reboot. At this point, just because I'm paranoid, I usually reboot back into safe mode and run one more full scan. All of this will take a while, but it will be time well invested.

So far I have had a 100% success rate when using Anti-Malware to remove the Anti-Virus 200x trojan. Let's hope that the jerks that wrote the Anti-Virus 200x trojan haven't updated their code recently.

So far it has scanned 100'000 files and found 17 infections. Still scanning, thanks again RESPAWN and good luck to you Legend aswell.
 
Scan has finished, detected like 57 things. (After 3 hours)

I restarted my computer and etc, and I had many trojans and other deep sea creatures in my computer.
 
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a cure all for every infection, love that bit of software :D
 
Malwarebytes is a good software :D, I'm very protective bout my PC, so I just download all the anti-virus, malware, spyware, adware, roots, and more.

I already have:

ESET (Anti virus)
Adaware (Anti AD)
Spyot S&D (anti spyware)
Comodo Firewall (Firewall :P)
Malwarebytes (anti Malware?)

Its just because I download loads of stuff from torrented websites and don't trust half of em.
 
It seems like it i removed, and my Norton 360 still does not start upon boot, but I am getting no more pop-ups or slow connection. Thanks RESPAWN, however I would still like to chat with you when you are available.

Get some Internet Security program, it'll block some viruses.

The problem with that is, those things use up memory, making my web browsing slower. And Internet security does not in general block viruses, they just alert. I am a suborn person, I refuse to use anti-virus unless I actually get a virus.

Ummm.... I dunno what to say now... I guess Get Avast if you need it, its the only thing that doesn't bother you if its in your background, you can shut it off anytime.
 
There is a antivirus made by Norton for gamers.

That's pretty interesting. Never knew anything about such a thing. I'll check it out, but until then, I am virus free. This thread can be locked or closed, whichever. My problem is solved until further notice.
 
This thing is not gone. I am not a happy camper, and I am still getting Ad's in separate windows.

Please download Hijack Thisand run it.

Then, post the scan log here for analysis. If you're still getting pop-ups, obviously, you have some resident or embedded somewhere else.

As I've pointed out elsewhere, all scanners (including Malware Bytes) are reactive, not proactive. It's possible you've got something that isn't understood or recognized by MalwareBytes.

May need to do more exhaustive scanning for a rootkit or boot your PC into a non-Windows environment and scan from a Linux CD.
 
supposedly this virus is going around, my girlfriend and friend from school got it. sounds the same, anti-spyware 08 and fake security center.

cr@sh: goto my new tread, thats how i got rid of it. just install norton or whatever you bought after your done
