Hey guys, Im back. Recently I had asked for assistance, because suddenly I was capping at 30 fps on eGO servers. I am usually around fifty. I asked for help and you guys provided it, but I seem to not have gotten any relief.

What I am running:
(I used System Requirements Lab analysis for running TF2: Thats the game I play the most, and SRL gave the most detailed descriptiion of my system,)

Free Disk Space
Recommended: 5 GB
You Have: 5.2 GB PASS

This is an HP DV6 (maybe 5? cant remember) Laptop. I bought it nearly a year ago brand new from the website.

My normal ping on eGO servers. 80-100. Hasn't changed much. I have slow internet and live in minnesota.

What you guys suggested was the problem:
CPU usage. (I do have high CPU usage sometimes.)
Virus causing high CPU usage

What I've done to fix things:
Downloaded Gamebooster 1.1
Done multiple virus scans, with different scanners, with no results.
Made sure my battery setting is on high performance (It always is)
TF2 Graphic settings are at suggested settings for my system.
Attempted to mess with Graphic Card settings, but didn;t want to mess things up.

SO what is goin on with my computer? Why can't I join my fellow clanmates in gaming like I used to?

TF2 is still playable, but FPS flickers at 20-30. When I am in kill cam it goes up to 60, then back down to twenty. Sometimes, It drops to 9. Which is the lowest I can go.

Thank you so much for all the help you guys are putting into this. I really appreciate everything!

Free Disk Space
Recommended: 5 GB
You Have: 5.2 GB PASS

That may be the problem. You need much more free space than that for your computer to run properly. If you page file is 3 GB you should have at least 4 GB of free space. Ideally, i would say in excess of 20 GB free space.

You video card may be using HD space for computing, in addition to Windows using HD space for page file and other things.

Make sure you upgrade the video card as well, BIOS upgrades too.

Is that a laptop?

Gosh Frank. You're just uber helpful for me today. Thanks!

Yes it is a laptop. and I only had 160 gigs of freespace to start with. But I have 640 gig external hard drive. If I game with it connected will that make a difference? Or will I just have to delete everything?

No you can keep it connected. But don't delete stuff, just move files you don't need on the laptop HD on the external. I have a desktop with 600 GB and still have 1.50 TB in externals.

Clear some space and see if it makes a difference.

SO I was looking through my files, and can't understand where all my memory was eaten up. I have a lot of music, but not 138 gigs. Only 30 at the most. Is there any way to find out where it all went? Because I can't think of anything to move that hasn;t been uploaded already.

Try deleting files in your temporary folder. You'd be surprised how much disc space can be freed just by emptying that folder

Sure, go to "documents and setting/user/local settings".

There you should find the "temp" folder. Just empty it.

Also in the "local settings" find the "temporary internet files" folder and empty that as well. then check to see how much disk space you freed.

P.S.: If you can't see the "local settings" folder in the "documents and settings/user" directory, go to "tools" then to "properties" and in the second tab, i think it's under "view" make sure the box near "show hidden files" is checked, otherwise the "local settings" folder won't be shown.

I couldnt find a folder called documents and settings, but I did find a folder called temp, just by searching for it. So I cleared that out. or was that wrong?

Since you're using Vista, that folder is located in a different directory (Turn on hidden folders>Users>(Your Profile Name)>AppData>Local>Temp). If your system has slowed considerably since you first started using the computer, I'd recommend backing up all your data and doing a reinstall of Windows. Nothing compares to starting fresh.

I don't have a copy of vista.

triple post fail for me.

so I found that and emptied it. Will i have to restore all those files from a different temp folder i had found?

That's not a problem, if you're using a prebuilt computer, there should be a system restore option which reverts the computer to how the manufacturer shipped it.

Also, should I compress my c drive?

Defragmenting your C drive might improve performance, it's worth a try. The Windows utility will get the job done, but you can find faster tool by doing a Google search.

I wouldn't worry about it, temp files in-general aren't important for a program to run.

I defragged it, but theres an option to compress it. or is that the same thing.

Sorry, I thought you were referring to defragmentation, I wouldn't recommend compressing a hard drive, it can cause problems.

Don't forget you can also defrag your game files.
Right click on the TF2 game in your My Games list (in Steam) and defrag the local content.
Seems to have helped me load up faster, though I am not sure it did anything for frame rate.
