Clothing - a good jacket will last me to about 15-20 degrees. That is for normal daily use. If I plan on ice fishing/shoveling/hunting/hanging out outside, then I'll put on a coat, hat, gloves (as needed). Jeans is all you need for the bottom half. I don't use a scarf. Thats just me, I love the cold.
Ha, ice fishing, the state sportsit on a bucket freezing your butt off for hours on end over frozen water which is in turn over almost freezing water while holding a two foot long fishing pole over a hole you drill in the ice.* We're an odd bunch here.
Winters - your Texas car will hate you, then start rusting from the excessive amount of salt on the roads, then fall apart and be labeled a "winter car". (slight exaggeration on the falling apart part)
Good thing to mention, I didn't think of that. Yeah, whenever you can do it without freezing the doors shut, wash your car during the winter, too - especially the bottom. And if you want to see what happens to cars that aren't taken care of here, check out the junkyards - I hear cars get scrapped down south that look better than the cars a lot of people drive here.
My additions, although you went into this on the last page a bit too. Also, you can look into getting heaters installed under your cars' hoods, so that you can actually plug them in and get the oil thinned out a bit.
*actually, sit around with friends on the middle of a lake drinking beer then drive a beater truck around on the ice like a maniac, for most people >_>
