That's right folks! I'm Movin' to Minnesota! After 6 months of dry-well job searching in Texas (even crazy parts of Texas), I've been offered a PHP Developer position in Sebeka, Minnesota. So I, along with my good buddy eGO Chris Da Wolf will be gettin' into our respective automobiles next Monday* and heading North!

I currently plan to make the trip in about 3 days, with 6 hour hops each day. 6 hours was picked because (1) I know I can do that amount without losing function in my legs, (2) It's a nice round number, and (3) that leaves time to meet you guys!

And the best part? I get to expense the whole trip!

The rough plan for the trip is to:
  1. Kemp, Texas
  2. Dallas, Texas
  3. Oklahoma City
  4. Wichita (Stay the night here)
  5. Kansas City, Kansas
  6. Des Moines, Iowa (Stay the night here)
  7. Minneapolis, Minnesota
  8. Sebeka, Minnesota (Stay for a long time here with my job)

A more detailed path can be found on this Google Map: Google Maps Rock!

Now I can't go crazy, because I do have to pay for the trip out of pocket and then wait to get the money back. But! Since I have to sit in my van for 20+ hours anyway I might as well make up for it by meeting up with people on the way!

So! I'm looking for eGOers who live on that route who may be interested in meeting with AutoDMC and Chris Da Wolf; perhaps we can find a McDonalds or a Truck Stop or something on the route and get a group picture and shake hands or trade Cow stories or something.

I'm also looking for some protips about living up North. I'm a Southern boy, through and through, and the most snow I've seen is a little dusting on the path. Now, I'm quite familiar to icy roads, as that's what we get down here (black ice and freezing rain, yay!) but that's it :D

Also! Are there awesome things I should see along the way? Like I said, I've gotta make the trip anyway, might as well get a few photo ops, right? Now, I can't go too far off the path, but if I can keep the total route under 1400 miles, I think I should be OK. (They're paying me a per-mile, and they said if I don't go crazy they might pay for small detours, but on the other hand, they won't pay for blatant detours :D)

Road trip!

* Sure, it seems like short notice, but I didn't want to announce the big move until I'd signed on the dotted line :D

... :scared:

anyone wanna go dutch on a new down coat for him? get ready to feel your boogers freeze in your nose. i would recommend something like this

if you didn't already know, your only about 100mi from one of the coldest places in the united states... and Sebeka evidently has an average low during winter of -8...

just a thought, we should have a eGO meet in the Twin Cities sometime...

Come through Fayetteville and shave 12 miles off the trip! :P

Google Map

South I-540 between Fort Smith and Fayetteville is a really beautiful drive through the Boston Mountains.

im from louisiana and going up through kansas is the most boring ride i have ever been on dude.. so beware of nothing but rolling hills, pastures and trees.. so good luck

Darn, a couple hundred miles over and you would go through my town.

Sad face.

Saint Paul, MN - my haunt.

Ah, yes. The great Tx -> MN move. My family did that 12 years ago. From Dallas area -> Saint Paul. All because my dad got a new job, and the company payed for the move. Sound familiar?

Des Moines to Minneapolis is ~ 3hrs. (ProTip - Iowa State Patrol drives white cruisers.) It is a very boring drive. The only interesting things are the wind farms. Watch out for them in the norther area of Iowa. If you need a pit-stop, there is a nice Truck stop in MN, Exit 11, east side of I-35.

ProTip for Living in colder climates - When it is below zero, be careful when going out side. Make sure your nose and mouth are covered. Breathing in the freezing air can cause havoc on your lungs.

Things to see -
- If you are into outdoors stuff then you might want to check out Cabelas. There are two stores on your route in MN. One in Owatonna, and the other in Rodgers.
- Why not stop on by and see the Capitol Building of your new state? There are free 45min tours that start every hour on the hour.
- You could stop somewhere in the Saint Paul area and see !Woodstock!. Tours by appointment only.

Psh, I live in Winnipeg, MB, Canada and we get temperatures down to -40C with windchill.

I don't own any scarves nor toques. (Just gloves) ;D

Heck,
Depends on what time you'd like to meet... and the day.
I live in Ames/Iowa State (hey our annoying lame ISU Patrol was mentioned!!!)

I wouldn't mind a little meet-n-eat or whatever you want to call it ;)
I'm guessing you're driving up North via Interstate 35? (passes right next to Ames, which is 30 minutes North of Des Moines)

Send me a PM if you'd like ;)

Sebeka, Minnesota? A population of less than a thousand.. You better be bringing hunting/fishing gear. Or like Woodstock said, stop by Cabelas.

Enjoy 35E into the Twin city's.

Was born an raised in Northfield MN(Not living there anymore : (). MN is not all that bad tbh, you will enjoy it. Grats on the job!

I've made the trip from OKC to MSP... too many times. Probably nearing 10 times now. In a car. Not much to see unless you really dig corn fields. When will you be in OKC?

6 Days till I leave the place I've lived for 12 years. I have to live in Minnesota now for 18 years to keep the flow going. Garland for 6 years, Kaufman for 12. And I wanna meet alot of eGO'ers so speak up you in the back!

Wow. And I thought enterprise was small with our 24,420 Est. population.

Here.. THERE IS NOTHING TO DO. so seriously dude. Invest in a jeep.. or some form of outdoor entertainment. You're gonna need it. Trust me.

Awww. Texas will miss you, Auto, but so does Turbine. ;) Maybe now you can get that PC fixed, if not a brand new one. Seriously, congratz on the job! Brrrrrr!

Advice: get a Carhartt coat since they're invincible to cold and just about everything else, get a way to remove snow easier than a shovel unless you're living in the city with a small driveway, and expect summers to be warmer than this one (although this weekend is supposed to reach the 90's, so the weather's kind of all over this year).

Things to see: the Mall of America, of course. Valleyfair is a popular amusement park. Some more... unique things are the biggest ball of twine and the Paul Bunyan statues :P
