Negative Novint Falcon Review

I don't see how anyone could have a complaint about your customer service, Tom.

You're coming onto the forums and seem to be answering all the questions I've seen! For it not being your site's forums, I'd call that an outstanding outreach to the gaming community at large.

But for why I'm posting here, since this seems to be as good a place as ever to ask and get the information out in the open: Maybe this is listed somewhere that I haven't read, but can you speak about the "F-Gen Drivers" and what that will allow?

Currently the only thing stopping me from considering getting a Falcon is the only games I own that it will run with is TF2 and I believe F.E.A.R., and from what I've seen the Falcon should perform well (and be fun as playing with a Touch Screen) for RTS's and possibly MMOs.

Will these F-Gen Drivers allow it to simulate plain mouse control (and thus work with all games, like a regular joypad mapped to simulate the mouse)? Will specfic drivers allow for full-features like the kickback/"vibrate" on the Falcon for specific games?

thanks for your note cupcake. I like getting on the boards and getting involved with community. I was on TF2 a couple nights ago and think it might have been you I was playing with (I think I remember it was 'cupcake'), and you killed me about a million times lol, if it was you. There was someone who was totally pwning me all night.

anyways, here's some info on F-Gen.

The F-Gen drivers emulate a mouse, and are customizeable, making the Falcon work with any PC game. You can adjust the movement scales for the Falcon's control, and save settings for various games. There will be settings where you can map buttons to different controls in games, and we also will have a system for gesture recognition in which you can easily access 36 simple to remember gestures to activate any key press or macro. A movement such as moving right then moving forward, could turn on your flashlight (along with haptic cues to make the movements easy to control), while down-down could make you crouch. We can even use it in other apps, such as forward-up is cut while forward-down is paste.

There will be 4 levels of game support. F-Gen Bronze, F-Gen Silver, F-Gen Gold, and Falcon HD. F-Gen Bronze will just be basic mouse support with customized inputs. F-Gen Silver will have basic forces. F-Gen Gold will have strong force feedback support. With Falcon HD titles (all of our current titles are Falcon HD), we have source access to the game and we can get full Falcon support implemented. Call of Duty 4 will be our first F-Gen game for example, and hopefully it will be F-Gen Gold. F-Gen will implement a pixel reader to get game information and a scripting system so that the community can adjust forces and add game support. We're also looking into DirectX support and other ways in which we can add in more forces.

thx, tomnovint

right on rustypwns - it is great you'll be in the community. Looking forward to playing with you. thx, tomnovint

It's great to see you getting so involved with the community, Tom. This type of involvement and passion definitely garners my respect.

I really want to try the Falcon out, see just how it feels, before I determine if it will provide me a good return for my money, though. If you could go out and have some sort of demo-ing program, it may sway many people into buying it.

I don't like being uncertain before I buy something, and almost always try to see them in person first. I have a feeling if I were to be able to play a bit with the Falcon, I'd pick it up.

Well I know when I first got it I was all antsy to install it the FIRST thing I did was plug it in... that's a no no or so I found out from Eric at Novint support :P after I reinstalled everything and had a bit more help from Tom, the falcon was just awesome. I have never seen anything like this before. Now playing with GiZmo aka my falcon is just awesome, TF2 from the Orange box is actually pretty fun now... no offense TF2 division <3.
Tom you have truly been awesome man, very helpful and personal, you don't find that much in companies these days. I have really appreciated the time that you have spent just going through eGO forums and answering the questions that a few of us members in the INS division had.
I also wanted to extend my deepest apologies to you, because that post was completely unprofessional and rude, well that's my feelings personally. His thoughts could have been expressed in a much more respectful manner, but I guess whats done is done...

Many thanks again,

John aka =(eGO)= PIMP DADDY SMURF

Oh and would you happen to have maybe a date for when that driver is going to come out?
I'm super excited, can't wait to play INS with it!

Hey All, this is tomnovint, Novint's ceo. I was looking over the boards, and saw a negative experience from someone. I thought it would be good to give my two cents on it. Part of the reason I get on the boards is to understand problems and fix them.

One thing I want to point out, is that I appreciate how EGO runs things. I've never seen such a clean board, and a more respectful group of gamers. Pretty awesome really. It's a very unique and admirable community. Even this thread wasn't overly rude - just showed frustration. I saw the thread was moved, but I actually think it would be worthwhile for me to point out a few things, that I think people would generally appreciate understanding about Novint and the Falcon. Here are my thoughts...

Recently EGO members were offered a Novint falcon for the price of $100. Many members ran out and bought the falcon because of the low price. After using the falcon, and talking to other ego members who bought a falcon, we have all come to the same conclusion:

It does not work very well.
** - This is news to me, and definitely not the norm of what I hear back from people inside or outside of EGO. For reference, we have had only a couple Falcon return requests (this one, and one other who changed his mind after talking to us). I have heard of some problems getting started, which I'll explain below (partly in the hopes that people don't hit those problems). I hear many positive experiences, so if people aren't having a good experience, I'd definitely like to hear about it. As I say, I'm here to fix problems and get involved with the community.

It works on 5 games, barely. I had to reformat my hard drive to make it work. And it dumps all of its calculations on your cpu, I went from 60-100 fps on TF2 to 10 fps!
** - In terms of game support, we are close to releasing our F-Gen drivers, which will make the Falcon work on all games. Also, we have 5 Valve games, but over 50 supported titles overall (many are smaller titles, but they are a lot of fun) and a number of new AAA titles on the way. In terms of dropping fps, this is not a common problem. I personally read through all of our support emails, and a drop in fps is not common at all. Needing to reformat the hard drive, I've not heard of before. I'm not putting the problems aside, but want to put them in perspective.

Novints customer service is horrid! I called the number and no one ever is there, even during business hours.
** - again, not to minimize these problems, but I have literally pages I've collected saying how wonderful our customer support is. The effort starts from the top, and you all might see how much I personally get involved in things. Like I said, I read every customer support problem myself to make sure things are going smoothly. One thing we admittedly don't do, is take phone calls right off the bat, which is where I think this frustration is coming from. We're too small to handle calls like that, as they don't provide a good time to customer ratio, but we do take calls when needed. For reference on this post, the person writing it sent me an email from these boards asking to contact someone. I responded with my cell number. I think getting the CEO of a company's cell number is pretty good support lol. That also points out how rare in the scheme of things this level of problem is. I didn't hear back, so I'm guessing that the email got lost in spam, which probably added to the frustration.

There contact info is different in the manual then on the website.
** - that's true. reprinting and repackaging manuals after we made some changes would be very expensive and time consuming.

Don't waste your money! I wish I never bought it, and so does everyone I have talked to.
** - I'm sorry for the experiences, but the series of problems are outliers. I'm not minimizing the issues, but the two computer issues coupled with the bad customer support experience are individually rare, let alone all 3. Not sure why you didn't get my email as well, with my mobile.

Also they wont tell me were to send my falcon for a refund.
** - I was blind copied on an email today that said where to return it.

To tell you the truth, I feel that they are just trying to get rid of there inventory of failed products, by dumping them on us.
** - this definitely isn't the case lol. I'm only doing this because I passionately believe in what we're doing, and love seeing customer after customer (for the vast majority of what I've seen) say that they love the Falcon and don't want to play any other way. It's fulfilling growing the company, and seeing how much people really like the Falcon

Dont get me wrong, I like the idea of the falcon, but it just does not work well!
** - again, sorry for the troubles. If you see this post commander, we can pay for shipping for the return (or can reimburse you). I'm sorry you had a bad experience, and hopefully that will at least help, so that it's clean in the end, and nothing was lost except for some time.

Here are a couple other tips to help people with some initial common problems (cut and paste from a document we are now packaging with the Falcon. I think this will help with the majority of issues people might be having)...

thanks
tomnovint

GETTING THE BEST EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR NOVINT FALCON

Congratulations on the purchase of your new Novint Falcon! We?ve compiled a few tips to get the most out of the Falcon. The majority of our customer support issues fall within these categories, so this is not the usual list that you just glance at, and decide not to read. Please follow these tips and tricks:

? Do not use the Falcon drivers in the enclosed CD. Instead, please download the latest drivers from our website. They can be found from www.novint.com under the support tab pulldown, and the ?downloads? selection. This takes you to http://home.novint.com/support/download.php
A number of games will not work without these new drivers, such as the Orange Box from Valve.

? Install the Falcon drivers before you plug in the Falcon to the USB port!!!

? If the computer is having a hard time connecting to or finding the Falcon, make sure to use a USB port directly on the back of the computer and make sure that you are not connected to a USB hub. USB hubs typically do not work with the Falcon.

? If the light on the front of the Falcon is red, pull all 3 arms all the way out of the base and then push them back in, to calibrate the Falcon so that it is ready to play.

? The Pistol grip is shipped separately from the Falcon, if you ordered one.

? Start with the Falcon Tutorial. It is an awesome experience.

? When you are learning to play First Person Shooter games, we highly recommend that people use the default settings for controlling aiming and turning while learning the Falcon?s control scheme, especially in online competitive play. After you have about 10 hours under your belt, then you can start tuning settings for more performance. We?ve found that most users are comfortable with navigation within an hour, and as proficient as they were with the mouse after about 20 hours of play. After that, most of our users report that they can actually surpass their mouse based skills in FPS games.

? Do Not try to use the native 2D mouse support in N VeNT to play games. It won?t be a good experience, as it wasn?t designed for that use. It is for simple windows navigation.

? There is a known issue with the current version of N VeNT in which it can cause a slowdown when playing games. Do not use N VeNT when playing the Orange Box or any other Steam games from Valve. If your computer is running games slowly, you can typically find the executables to run the games directly in the ?C:Program FilesNovintGames? folders, if needed.

? Please email [email protected] if you have any further questions

Also, please check out our new referral program at ?http://home.novint.com/novint/referral.php?. In it, you can sign up for your own referral code, and give it out to your friends, or just generally give it out to anyone/everyone to get the word out about the Falcon. Anyone who uses your code when purchasing will get a great discount, and we?ll pay you cash for each sale you referred!!! Finally, I?m personally at your disposal to make sure your Falcon experience is a great one. I personally answer all of our message board posts, so ask me anything, anytime on our boards. Thx, Tom Anderson, CEO (tomnovint, on the boards).

Maybe you need an expert on Bugging!!!! I'm the Tester & Quality Assurance Lead on our new game were creating for this clan called: "Holy Strike"!

Peace bro!

I recieved my Falcon recently, and after a few days I became better and more comfortable at using it than I was with my mouse, so I don't know where the complaints are coming from.

I must say, I am VERY impressed with Novints support, not to mention an awesome product! You're doing a great job Tom!

+1

I was on TF2 a couple nights ago and think it might have been you I was playing with (I think I remember it was 'cupcake'), and you killed me about a million times lol, if it was you. There was someone who was totally pwning me all night.

I haven't been on lately (and have bad memory!) so I can't say for sure it was me but we could always arrange something if you wanna find out. ;)

And thanks for the info! Knowing the Falcon could quite literally be a global replacement for a mouse (and not just a TF2 replacement) means it'll definately be something I'll snag in the next few coming months or at the latest for this Christmas season.

Hey The Red Comet, thanks for your note. Appreciated reading it.

We're working on a program to get the Falcon into cybercafes. Hopefully that will solve the problem for you.

We also have a 30 day money back guarantee if you don't like it, which is another option. We have had very few returns, for reference.

thanks

right on pimp daddy smurf. I've really enjoyed your interactions, and I think your name and pic are funny lol. Thanks for your support, and glad you're part of the Falcon community! thx, tomnovint

Even though I don't own a Falcon, I can appreciate a company who's CEO gets his hands dirty to make sure customers are satisfied. I know that should I decide to pick one up, any concerns will be addressed quickly and that the company cares about feedback (both positive and negative).

If only more vendors did this...

i'm looking forward to be playing on my novint falcon, i got the pistol grip today but the real deal is still in some postoffice somewhere :S but with that beign said, i think the wait time will be worth it :)
does using the Novint falcon decrease your fps? and if it do about how much?

thx Jubei

Drambar, the Falcon doesn't cause noticeable FPS drops. Unless your computer is right on the edge of being able to run a game, the Falcon won't cause anything noticeable (make sure N VeNT is not running though when you use Steam games, or if you have problems with any other games - it takes some computing cycles that are unnecessary. We're fixing this though)

thx, tomnovint

its not going to decrease FPS, its basically a substitute for the mouse, I've used it at my friends house and its very fun :)

I've got a falcon and I love it. Works great and looks great!

Keep up the great work Tom!

I have yet to get a Novint Falcon, but want one terribly.

It's very nice of you to address the negative feedback rather than ignore it.

I for one, would love to have a Falcon. People just want to see results fast and will not take the time to get used to the Novint Falcon, but rather go online and bash it. I don't have the cash for one at the moment, and believe me seeing that promotion deal for it a couple weeks ago was mocking me. :) Hopefully I'll get one, but I have college coming up and books aren't cheap.

Thanks for supporting eGO Tom.
