Novint Falcon Experience Thread

I will be getting mine soon, the problem is that tomnovint crated a code for me to use to get the sale, but he lowered it, but the code is not updated yet :P. I will be getting my Falcon and writing a review on it when I get it (when the code get's fixed)

Looking VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY (in case you missed it, VERY) forward to getting mine!

Should I coordinate this with Chris Quintos (the guy who made the code) to get this right? I just don't want this to get complicated :)

im very curious about the falcon, my main question is: does it work with all games straight out of the box?....

for the force feedback, does that require special drivers for each game?

for example i buy the falcon, install it and boot up cod 5 or l4d 2, well the falcon work? would the only thing id be missing is the force feedback? (recoil of the guns?)

I've decided that this is going to be the next item I purchase. Life being what it is, I'm going to have to set aside funds from the weekly entertainment budget and save up for it.

Not a hardcore gamer here, but definitely play for fun. Looking forward to having this add to the experience. Big thanks to everyone that's supplied their opinions. I'm simply not talented enough at video games to play for skill, so anything makes the experience more enjoyable is a big plus in my book.

And if there is one thing almost every review here agrees upon, the Falcon definitely adds to the experience in a big and fun way.

Looking forward to owning the product, and also supporting an innovator in computer input devices.

I have just ordered my Falcon now!!!! I am very excited!!!

I have a question, though. When you get it, you get an email saying to download Penumbra from backup.filesanywhere or something like that. It's a ZIP file. Anyway, when I run the install, it asks for a product key. Is this simply my order number?

Thanks, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, maybe some of you saw this before :)

Hey tweakedhuman, yes, it works straight out of the box for all games in terms of control using F-Gen. I've gotten so used to the control that I can't play worth anything with a mouse anymore, so for me, even just the control is a big upside. I believe that there will be a small download for most games soon, that will add forces in.

Nice post D.T.S - happy to give you a good deal since your eGo, if you email me at tf2contest[at]novint[dot]com ;)

DI, thanks for your post, and looking forward to you joining our community! Welcome to the Falcon Family!

for Penumbra, you'll get a code in the next day or so, in a separate email.

thx, tomnovint

Falcon: Won
Opinion: Fun Experience. Hard to use as a heavy. But takes time to get better. Once you have passed that curve. It is actually quite entertaining. To the point i also advertise to my friends and family who play computer games. Defiantly worth it all.

Falcon: Bought

Opinion:

Freakishly awesome! It is an extremely fun device to play around with, and I'm making a review for it, stay tuned :D

O.K.

I was gifted my falcon from Altec after he won it. <3 altec

Falcon w/ Pistol Grip (No orange box)

Pros.

Well built, very sturdy, does everything it advertises to do.
Easy to configure, control and understand.
Fun game pack (kids and I both loved it)
Even my kids can control the Falcon with ease (6yo-12yo)
Excellent responses in games (push, pull, weight, texture, recoil, weightlessness, and being hit).
Heavy enough that the recoil and other effects do NOT slide it around my desk. Good design on the physics there :)
Good tutorial, very thorough.

Games Ive Tried:
Left 4 Dead
Crysis
Half-Life Series
Portal Series
Team Fortress

Cons:
Pistol grip is definitely not made for a woman or children. I can grip the trigger fine, but struggle to reach the buttons.. maybe if they were a little bit lower on the grip could i reach them with my thumb.. either that or a little thinner in the grip perhaps.. Kids had the same issues. We had to kind of contort our thumbs to reach buttons in heavy combat. If I let go of the trigger and move my hand JUST a little I can reach it.. so.. I'm thinking a thinner grip (across the side not the back) would probably fix this issue the best. If you are thinking about remaking the pistol grip.. May I suggest a three button on the back of the chamber? Perhaps compressing the slight hangover of the chamber and making that a little wider to accommodate for the buttons? If you want a drawing of my idea let me know, I can create it in photoshop.

Attachments aren't exactly SNUG on my falcon. I don't know if that's just me or not. I noticed it the most when using a shotgun and the tank in Crysis. My grip began to squeak so I stopped for a moment to check if perhaps my recoil was too high (even though it was all on normal settings) I had a gap in between my Grip and the Falcon o.O! It was in as far as it would go. If that's normal.. let me know. I would think you would want that thing tight considering the forces exerted. But in the same sense I can also see wanting a little bit of slack to reduce tear on the attachment's locking mechanism. I only noticed it because it was creaking, so it worried me a bit.

Other thoughts:

I know you are still in developing the mods and .dll files to allow for the falcon in game. I was wondering what games you had considered developing the library files for?

I would LOVE to try this thing in the Call of Duty series, the Battlefield: Series, Borderlands and Mass Effect Series.

I have one more small thought; the pistol grip is not lefty friendly. My dad who's a lefty can't use the pistol grip because the buttons are on the wrong side for him.

Also, I think I may have foud a bug for the Crysis mod. When you use the DSG1, aka the sniper rifle, there's no way to increase zoom except by grabbing the mouse and usin the scroll wheel.

They have a prototype grip w/ scroll wheel.. .. but the buttons would still be way outta reach for me :/ bah

Hey guys,

thanks for your notes.

Facey, on the grip being snug, you might try pushing the grip release lever apart to tighten up the grips (spread it rather than pull it together)

We are working on our F-Gen drivers which will greatly increase our game support. Have a look at our boards at Falconarmy.com to check our our progress there ;)

thanks
Tom

Hey Tom. Just wanted to say I only got to use the falcon for around... an hour or so because I was at a friends house. But let me say it was a very fun experience getting to feel everything and using something other then a mouse. I would love a chance to test it for a longer time period but I can't buy my own because I'm saving for a computer. but overall, Lots of fun to play with and gets rid of some of my hand cramps I can get from to much time on a mouse. :)

thanks for notes guys. If you ever need anything you can always reach me at falconarmy[dot]com ;)

thx, tomnovint

Novints Falcons look so cool! I want to get one so bad. All i am asking is : Is it worth it? it seems a little challenging to use. How much is each one. they look sweet!!! i would love to buy one

Hey pillzburydough, thanks for your note. We have a lot of happy customers and a strong return policy (with very few returns), so most people who get one feel it is worth it. The learning curve is small for single player play. There is a bit of a learning curve for online play against other people (about 20 hours on average until you're comfortable), but most people get to or surpass their mouse skills. Let me know if you have any questions or if you get one ;)

thx, tomnovint

i would love to have more info about what this thing does and how much it costs!

www.novint.com should have all the relevant information you require. For the bundle it's ~$199 but I also believe if you are an eGO member you get another ~$40 off making it ~$159

It's tempting. I'm about at the point where I need to replace my mouse as it's starting to wear out.

Hey Balthizar, you can always email me at tf2contest[at]novint[dot]com as well if you have any specific questions ;)

Thanks Master Gunns ;) I'm always open to giving Ego members a little better deal than everyone else, so feel free to email me as well, if you want to get one. Check out Falconarmy.com as well - it has links to TF2 events we do, where you can play with other people who use Falcons.

thx, tomnovint
