I think the unlockables should possess standard stats (if the variable stats are true), and definitely be based on either merit, or just be given to you.

As annoying as the milestones are for a casual player, at least they are generally useful in terms of educating and practicing particular strategies you may not have otherwise considered

I wish it was some how connected to kills at least. I mean, people are just randomly getting weapons with out even doing anything. Last night i was playing on Sawmill and someone that was AFK randomly got the Huntsman. It makes no sense to me.

I think it might be a little better if they can explain how it works. I got Jarate last night just standing on an already controlled control point looking around for Spies..as a Soldier. I can understand why everyone is frustrated, at least with the achievements you knew when you were going to get a new weapon.

no i hate it was so happy when it was downloading then i log on, And nothing Yeah that made me mad.

I can't STAND the acheivement farming just to get weapons, so for that reason I like it. Although, if they were just going to give everyone weapons without having to work for them, why not do just that, give them to everyone all at once. At the very least, just give the dropped weapons to those actually playing the class. Seems silly to get a sandman when I'm playing pyro.

luckly enough to find all the spy weaps, but they should just give it all at once since you can get items while seeding =/

I voted no.

Finding items isnt the problem. The problems is, that I've "found" 2 weapons...FaN and Ubersaw...And you can just guess did I have them already?

Valve, if you give us weapons we already had, then give us an ability to dualwield the weapons. I want dual Ubersaw, now.

I like the new system as long as people don't get repeats for items they already had. If they fixed that I'm sure everyone would be happy. That is the only major gripe for people to find items that they already had, or trying to unlock new items, but end up unlocking old stuff i.e. someone found bonk energy drink. haha.

Due to the fact that I have summer break, and cannot play TF2 (a bug prevents me from joining any server) I had a lot of time to think about unlockables, and what if they changed the system yet again?

My idea was that you would give a certain unlockable to a player once they had reached a specific average playtime for the class that unlockable is for. For the sake of argument let's say you play spy, on average, 10 hours per week or so; well, soon as that average moved up to 11 (or some other specified average playtime) you would be given the cloak and dagger, or some other unlockable. This way the weapons still have to be earned but cannot be easily farmed.

Keep in mind, I just came up with this seconds ago so I've not been able to work out the logistics entirely, so I'm sorry if there's a glaring flaw and it sucks.

I like:
That I got an ubersaw :P
That we don't have TOO many spies/snipers

I don't like:
That even as an RPG it fails, since in RPGs you actually do stuff to get weapons
That TF2's achievements are now just like all other games'... they do nothing

I would like:
If they kept some sort of system to unlock stuff for other classes, so that we don't have an excess of snipers/spies/whatever class is being updated

Some minor RPG elements are ok (and not a lot of people are gonna agree on this, I imagine, but even random "drops" are fine with me), but there should be some method to the madness. And if things do actually "drop" from other people, PLEASE Valve, don't make us have to go pick them up.

EDIT: Dan just posted while I typed. Thing about that is that people will still play a class a lot just for weapons.

Yeah, but as opposed to popping into an achievement server for an hour or so and coming out with all the weapons they will have to log onto any server for a considerably larger amount of time. Some might try to abuse the system by going afk after logging in, but most respectable servers discourage that and kick people for doing so. So the easiest way to get the weapons would be to actually play the class frequently, which to me seems a reasonable way of being "earning" the unlockables.

Wrong. The achievements are still a nice addition to the game, it gives that sense of doing something right when you headshot 3 ppl standing on a CP and pop an achievement, and it let's everything else know it as well.

But this new system sucks, I just spent 4 hours on Blackmesa and I got the Axtinguisher, and the FaN both of which I already had. I then witnessed many people sitting AFK in base and before rounds getting Razorback's and whatnot, and Use My Teleporter got the Dead Ringer basically right after he joined.

/sigh

I have 3 things to say about the new system-(sorry if t hurts the eyes a little.)
First and most importently I'm sorry about all the wining(I could have used some cheeze to go with it) about the drop rate while I was on the blackmasa server last night. 100+kills 20some deaths and I get something I ALREADY HAD!
Secondly I would like to sell a car that will never need fuel to Value or to any solftware maker that thinks that people should be "understanding" when releasing untested update.*
Third I hope they say that it was BETA testing for the next game.
*This is how solftware pogramers work, it looks good on paper but NEVER works.

I enjoy it. Sure people complain now but thats because they attribute it to grinding when it really isnt.

They did it this way so people dont all spam the updated classes and make the game unfun.

From what I can collect most of the people who dont like this new system are one of three types of people.

1) Cheaters: They go to achievement servers and get their toys.

2) Impatient People: ... They are impatient...

3) Elitist: People who think they only deserve the weapons because they got some fancy achievement.

I like the system, it will make servers normalize a lot quicker than previous updates did.

I agree, it's silly seeing people get unlocks they already have. I hate achievement farming it devalues the whole point of even having them.

I got 2 unlocks in about 3 hours for the spy, my least played class, yay! But now i can't even play because tof the water_dx80 thing again. If i have to reinstall everytime i play i'm gonna jump off a bridge.

I am in the same position as many people here, I played for 3 hours last night once the update came out and I received nothing. No duplicates, no new weapons, nothing. In the course of my 3 hour playing I saw other people get many weapons. I think I saw every single weapon unlocked.
The system is not based upon merit, it is 100% random. While playing i was on the top of the score board, I many decent runs as a pyro and as a sniper, but I saw no weapons. I unlocked several achievements for sniper, but nothing. I don't like this system.

1) This update is buggy. I'm not saying be happy with Valve that they released a buggy patch, but now you see what happens when you rush a company into doing something. Would you all have been super happy to see this whole thing go through another 2 months of beta testing to iron out every bug? I almost assure that would not be the case.

2) With this buggyness there could be problems with the new pick up method. Wait until Valve releases info on how it works then we can make a real judgment.

3) This system is actually less like an rpg than the last one. Especially thinking of WoW. Which is more RPG-like: grind for a couple of hours on specific things (monsters, achievements) until you get the right quest reward or play the game normally without any real interruption and randomly get something new. The former is WAY closer to almost any rpg, especially MMO's, that you are going to encounter.

4) Valve is still updating their games. FOR FREE. It's not often companies give you completely new content (key word, content) updates for free. Just to give an example, CoD 4 hasn't received a patch in almost a year now. They have released 5 patches in total and they have almost entirely been bug fixes. I'm to lazy to go and count the number of updates Valve has released that have been content related, but it's been a lot. TF2 didn't need new content. The base game was rather good. But new content keeps it alive and fun for much longer than your average FPS.
