i7 940 @ 4.0ghz+

I have hope the i7 940 can do 4.0ghz + with a NH-D14

I wanna see Cooler master come out with an update to the V10 that actually perfects the TEC and gets crazy temps unlike the current one
 
The 940 should hit 4 with relative ease. I haven't worked with a C0/C1 chip, but my D0 920 is running 3.6 with 1.76 volts, and that's just my laziness. I could probably reduce voltage even more if I took the time.

But unless you're planning on doing folding, encoding, rendering, etc, no point in OCing the 940. Games may even suffer in performance due to the extra heat.

1.76? Whats your Bclck at multipliers at?
 
I run a i5 2.66 @4001mhz with 20x200 and use a noctua. It's fine all day long.
I can't see why people would pay more for a 920 and get less, and more HT they are not going to use :\

920 is faster in apps and all that, and of course everything said about with folding and encoding.........920 is also on a socket LGA 1366 and X58 mobos are high end and let you do CFX/SLI with x16/x16 speeds unlike P55 which like last gen P45 only does x8/x8

X58 is higher end, P55 is mid-end basically

As for why im getting a 940....because its from my uncle and its easier for me to buy it from him rather than trying to convince my parents to give me a credit card to order a 920 online, and it also might be cheaper for me to buy it from him along with mobo and all that rather than buying a new 920 with a new mobo and all that.

I will let everyone know the price i can get it at when he tells me.....im so stoked, i also have a buyer for my old rig, a friend of mine that will buy my mobo/ram/cou/HSF for $300 so that will help out a lot

I can't see how people can be this foolish.

Just because YOU won't use 8 threads doesn't mean that other people won't. Also, a 920 can run at 20x200 just as easily as a 750 can, if not easier(1156 on board PCIe lanes make ocing a little trickier). Thirdly, P55 is limited to 16 PCIe lanes, while x58 can have 36. This means that if you want to run anything more than single card or low end SLI/CFX, you should invest in the X58 platform. Oh yeah, the X58 has triple channel RAM as well So, you're paying more to get more. Makes sense if you can afford it, no?

What applications(other then folding(which i'm not building a machine for) , but anyone have a real list of what uses 4 cores? or all 8threads in a cpu with HT? After all the research i did, i couldn't find any that really used more then 2 or 4(accept serato scratch live overview builds)
I also edit video. I have a work i7 and a personal i5, and i have no differance in projects.
I dont need someone to tell me all the things i wont use, but talking about a i7 reaching 4.0ghz and being of any use, i'd like to hear real world examples of applications/games that can actually use this? I'll be waiting......and ya, you have to call me stupid, cause i am asking what will use 8 threads.

again, i would like to see a real world application/game/program that makes use of the extra....and i dont want to hear "folding@home" as people are not building these rigs for that, and if you are, you could donate your money to alot better causes.

Now maybe 'm crazy for not wanting to waste more money to see no real differance once i OC to 4ghz, but for me, and everything i researched, i have NO USE for a i7 when i can just get a cheaper i5 and bump it.

Concept #1: Multitasking.


I do not know of any programs other than folding and benchmarks that will utilize 8 threads by themselves. However, I know of many that will utilize 2+, and even up to 4. If you want to run a couple of those at a time, 8 logical cores will be very useful. Surely, being a video editor, you have experienced slowness when encoding a video while simultaneously ripping some clips off of a DVD, using Soundbooth to edit audio, and photoshop to create a picture for a video? That is minimized with 8 threads.

And btw, I didn't call you stupid for asking what will use 8 threads, because, well, you didn't ask that. You told me I would never use 8 threads, which is simply false.

No i dont experiance slow downs, because, a machine built just for that is only doing that. I would NEVER attempt to rip a dvd to a drive and encode at the same time :)

(also for the record, i'm not a video editor, i just go ta new computer at work and got them to spring for a i7.) I do use a computer at work, and i multitask like crazy, but strange as it is, not as much as i do at home on my personal computer.

I'm also not sure about video editing, as i just use premiere elements, maybe final cut or something uses all the cores?

That's what I was thinking, in the 15 seconds it takes to rip something form a DVD you could do like 3 push-ups or something.....:P

Premiere Pro CS4 can use up to 4 threads, I believe.
 
no offense NADES but im not really interested or care about your argument with FreakingHell

First of all, this thread isn't really about you or your own rig which you stated a couple of times........its about me and an i7 940 lol

Second, there are a lot of reasons why someone would go X58 and get an i7 9xx over a P55 and i5/i7
As i said before and FreakingHell stated, PCIe Lanes being one of them and the ability to do Quad-Fire/Quad-SLI and such while having benefits and not slowing down

x16/x16 etc......which a P55 cannot do

Overclocking though new and different being introduced with the X58 i7 9xx series is easier than the i5 and P55 with the PCIe controller and all that as stated already

Honestly, im just getting an i7 940 because my uncle is selling it, if not, i would have gone with a 920 for cost reasons.....and all i wanna do is get the i7 940 to 4.0ghz and hope its possible/achieveable with any i7 940 as long as you have a beast enough cooler like the NH-D14, i only brought up this thread because i've read on the net its hard to get a C0 stepping i7 920 to 4.0ghz, though possible with the correct cooling, it is hard as you need more volts and such.

Im praying that the i7 940 are part of a better batch and such that they will get to 4.0ghz easier and easily as the i7 965

PewPew, don't worry too much about 4Ghz though. The difference between 3.8 and 4.0 is negligible, and I guarantee you will be able to reach 3.8.
 
I'm not arguing with anyone, more asking people with good reasons to get a i7, or what reasons they are, and what games/applications actually give them better, not worse preformance. From everything i've read, and know about, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Now if we all had uncles selling used setups perhaps.

The C0's are toned down versions of the D0, and it seems no one has had good luck pushing them the same.

i dont mean it's a waste of money, but triple channel kits as well as 4 extra cores and all that aside, i would not want to see WORSE preformance in games, but that's the 920, not the 940, so good luck to you

yea i would be happy either way probably.......or i would go on a rampage beating ppl up screaming "WHY CANT I GET 4ghz RAHHHH!!!"

i've seen 920 C0 steppings get 4ghz so i feel a bit confident a better binned 940 can do it
 
Also, I should probably mention that I didn't overclock mine myself, my friend did. I just know what stuff he used, no idea what stuff to turn on and off, I just changed the voltages a little, he did all the frequencies and multipliers. Its gonna suck when I need to change any of those to overclock higher, seeing as he moved away, and I don't know any of that.

Anyways, this isn't about me. It's about you. Like Freaking said, 3.8-4 isn't a big jump. Overclocking doesn't really make too noticeable a difference IMO, but having 8 cores really helps for folding.
