Also, there are three monitors in this build, so you can have 2D Surround. :D If your desk doesn't have enough space, then get this monitor instead.
Mmm you get a sexy HDD set up. 2TB storage, 640GB main programs, and 60GB boot drive/important programs.
And I forgot to put in speakers, but get these speakers, they're perfect for gaming. I left over some money for keyboard and mouse.

you need SLI for surround...... that board doesn't support sli

What do you need thermal grease for? It's mainly for overclocking.
And, this cpu is better in games than that cpu.
And, 2 470s is a beastly set up.
And, the build I made for you and not TremendousLion has over 2.5TB of harddrive space, and includes an SSD.

Amd/Or Intel. Don't mind.

Don't plan on XFiring, though a 5870 in the future seems sufficient.
Doesn't need to run crysis on super high res or anything like that. I play mainly source games, or valve games (Alien Swarm, CS:S, L4D2, CS 1.6, DoD: Source.

No OC'ing
No minitor needed, I will be using my 32" LCD
No OS needed
Need an optical R/RW drive.
Needs some room to grow somewhere.
Possibly no HDD needed.
x58 isn't needed though x48 would be the least I want.
I have frys and microcenter around me.
No mail in rebates, there crap. Free shipping is always nice.

I think that bought covers the guidelines.

1b. What is your zipcode/postal code? 92563
1c. Where are you located: souther California. I am near fries and microcenter
2a. What is the main purpose of this computer? Gaming.
2b. If work and gaming, state which is more important. GPU needs to be at least dx11 and hdmi port (not with hdmi adapter)
3. Are you going to overclock? Not CPU, unlikely to on GPU
4a. What do you need in this build? DD3, new socket type for AMD or 1156 intel. 1336 not needed.
4b. How much harddrive space do you need/want? Might have a 1 TB already, so none.
5. How long do you plan on keeping this computer? 2 years?
6a. What kind of case do you like? Something under 50. At least a mid sized atx case.
6b.no mouse or keyboard needed

Well, I'm not going to be building a new system, just upgrading my current one.
Here are my current specs:
Asus P5Q SE2 motherboard (no raid, no crossfire, ok for overclocking, but not exceptional)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz which I usually overclock to 3.2-3.4 GHz
8GB DDR2 800 RAM which I can't overclock due to lame motherboard
HIS ATI RADEON 4870 with 1GB ram
WD Caviar Black 750GB HDD
Cooler master 600 Watt power supply

I am running this all in an Antec 900 case, so have plenty of room to spare. As well, I have upgraded heatsinks and fans on everything that needs it, so a little extra heat isn't a problem.

I have a budget of 300 dollars (I can go as high as 400 if necessary though), and want to make some upgrades. I was thinking getting a new motherboard and another 4870 and throwing it in crossfire with my current one.

What do you guys think would be the best series of upgrades? It doesn't have to be all at once, I usually plan my upgrades over the next few months.

GTX 460 and an A-DATA 500 Series SSD for a boot drive. That comes to about $300 if you get the 768MB version.

Humm...
The 4870 is a little bit above the 5770 for capabilities, so I'll use the 5770 for comparisons.
Between the 5770 and the 460 1GB, the 460 looks to be about a third again faster. Even in crossfire, the 5770 doesn't seem to match it, which would indicate the 4870 wouldn't either.

The big thing for me is my current games have no problem pulling 100+ fps on my hardware. I definantly want to upgrade the video card at some point, and it looks like the 460 probably will be better for the money than another 4870.

The question for me then moves to what to upgrade other than the video card. At this point, I am looking pretty far into the future (next 6 months to a year for full upgrades), so the upgrade doesn't need to have immediate benifit.
I do think getting a SSD would be useful, especially if I eventually get 2 and RAID them. However, going with a RAID of ssd or of caviar blacks would both require a motherboard that supports RAID.

I've looked, and the only motherboard I really like is the ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo. All the others just don't seem to have the overclocking ability or expandability I want. Obviously I then hit the snag of crossfire instead of sli for multiple video cards, but I don't think I'll have to worry about that for a good length of time.

Do you have any thoughts on this?

It's not worth it getting a new motherboard for a dead socket. Either splurge and get a nice 1156/i5 750/DDR3 ram combo/s, which would be closer to $400 instead of $300.
Or, how big is your monitor?

1080p 22" with dvi, vga, and hdmi inputs.
Also, it may be an obsolete socket, but I'm going to be waiting at least a year before upgrading the processor again, and my old components go in my other computers so having more spares is always useful for if one fails.

EDIT: Another thing that has cropped up that is pushing me towards a new motherboard is I picked up a comcast HD box with firewire enabled. I should be able to use it to record tv and change channels using my computer. I either need to get a firewire card, or get a new motherboard to get firewire in this computer.

I won't recommend getting anything for socket 775, so the most I would recommend is getting an SSD or two, and raiding them. You already seem like you know what you want to get, and you're just asking to see if I agree, instead of for my help.
