why all the rap hate?

How is " several measures of rhythm loop for a quarter of the song and several different looping measures for the other quarters" any more or less complex then a person on drums repeating the same thing, then base then guitar? Also why do you think the more complex a song / beat the better. I've heard super complex songs that were crap and extremely simple beats that were so catchy and amazing.

Basically we all need to admit that yes we have different opinions about music and what we all like, this is a fact of life. What I think the OP was getting at was why people insist on attacking rap music all out, e.g., in their sigs.

The beats being repeated aren't exactly the most complex, I suppose?

im not going to bother reading this thread. rap doesn't deserve the effort. rap isnt music, its just some retard talking fast about bling and money and his mansion with a annoying bass beat. id rather listen to modern pop then rap and i hate it almost as much. it takes zero skill and even less talent and im ive never been so glad to see a "fad" die away then rap. if you want real music then start with the punk, electro and post punk of the 80's and just work your way back in time.

the world would be a happy place without rap.

Actually by most definitions, rap is probably music. But what you described is most modern rap. I'd have to agree with that, mostly.

I only hate the stuff that has profanity every other word, doing drugs, shooting whitey in the face, breaking the law, racism, etc.

Only 1 Rapper I like, Jay-z, and I only heard of him through Linkin park.

Also, This picture.

Aside from some 80s pop that my parents listened to, Rap/Hip-Hop was the majority of music I was exposed to back at the end of the 80s when I got to the states; it was just about all I listened to through the 90s and now I hardly listen to it anymore.

There's so much of the genre that is in fact all about the bling/cars/clubs and it is garbage (strictly in my own opinion); but if you can wade through the bs, then there are some excellent artists out there who just have a way with words and when coupled with a great sounding beat can be absolutely a joy to hear.

("Mainstream" example for me is Common/Common Sense. The guy is just completely smooth and poetic with his words, I can listen to him throw out verses all day.)

But for the most part, these days I stay away from Rap/Hip-Hop and just continue to further extend myself into Rock, Metal, Jazz, Classical music, etc.

You CANNOT Make an informed decision about anything without experiencing both sides of the coin. I was like you, and then I actually listened to it. I grant you that some of it is stupid, but I also grant you that a lot of it isn't, and some of it I enjoy.

Have you ever listened to a rap artist for more than 5 seconds? Do that, and then you can talk about how it doesn't deserve the effort. More importantly, I challenge you to write a rap song. I don't even care about writing the music; just write lyrics. Come back later and tell me that it takes no skill.

I'm not for or against rap, but I'm sure as hell against unfounded bias.

i fail too see how it is not complex argument works look at stuff like bob Dylan or Elliott smith it's just 1 guy strumming chords and singing, pretty simple right but both of them are considered to be some of the best songwriters.

maybe all you you should stop arguing over a matter of opinion and not open your mouths until you informed yours selfs on both sides of the discussion because your opinion is worthless otherwise.

this applies for almost everything take a look at politics, say you have to debate a topic and your on the left wing side of it would you only read information that matches up with your views, no cause that is useless too you, you would want to know as much as possible about the oppositions views so you can counter them or agree to them.

This,

I honestly do not like rap by today's standards but to say that it requires NO skill is a complete and utter lie.

No matter what way anybody looks at it in it's too bad because rap IS music, no way around that. So lets stop questioning if it is music or not, hell me tapping my foot on the floor in a beat is music as well.

My main point is I can't stand modern rap. just bad in my opinion, some of the older stuff I can deal with (older hip-hop/rap 90's time period) Other then that I would rather stick with metal.

It is indeed impossible to argue with an ignorant person. They will always fail to see the other side. :/

Wow. This thread went downhill fast. Keep seeing people post the same thing over and over.

I'd like to point out that the definition of music has been a debate for awhile now and it won't be solved in this thread. Some people like rap, some people hate it. Some people consider it music and some don't. In the end it is a matter of opinion and nobody is wrong either way.

I personally used to dislike rap and would never even consider listening to it; however, when I was about 12 I heard an Eminem song. Granted he first caught my interest because a guy I was crushing on was into him...

When I started listening to Eminem it was like a whole new world opened up to me. Not just in music but in the realities of life. He didn't just sit there bashing women, homosexuals, and making racist remarks (not saying you won't find those in his songs) but he sang/spoke about things that too many people in this world have to deal with on a daily basis.

His own life is reflected in his songs.

I personally find his rap to simply be a more direct approach to expressing what too many people are afraid to say - especially when you have the limelight.

Oh no, I might say something wrong and make someone mad...so I won't have any political views at all let alone speak about something taboo.

I will admit I do not avidly seek out any other rappers so I can only talk about Eminem's music but I think some of you whom have never heard him but still insist wrap is bad should check out some of his songs. If you want a more specific list let me know because I can name ones without too much stuff listed in them that are vulgar/drug related/blah blah...but still have a message. One of my favorites is "like toy soldiers" which I'd suggest the video on youtube rather than just the lyrics.

Now - I feel I really must point this out since someone mentioned how eGO members probably don't like songs due to them being filled with racism and such in them.

It's a song and it does not really reflect most of Eminem's views.

Heck, he's sang with Elton John for Pete's sake. xD

It's more or less part of the rap genre I suppose.

When I hear Eminem sing - even if it is a song filled with profanity and whatever...it makes me feel better and have hope for the world since even he has hope despite all he's been through.

like toy soldiers is one of my favorite songs by him :D

Referring you to my previous post about how metal is completely retarded. kthxbai.

your post is as much of a flame post as zodiacs me, and as most people who actually gave rap a chance on this thread say, most non Mainstream rap isnt about "retards talking fast about bling and money, which is why i say lil wayne is giving rappers a bad name. :|

I keep going back to eminem, cause he is my favorite rapper but still this is all true.

Eminem has made almost 160 songs. out of all those songs, Not ONE of them is about bling and money, if anything its about the opposite of that. He doesn't rap about that, lil wayne does. I hate lil wayne >.>

ANY WAY for those who have given this thread thought, i want to thank you for making a thoughtful discussion about this, especially for those who made posts who took to long to read so i just watched the videos attached to them :P Thanks for a good thought about this, i just wanted to say this before if it gets locked :)

You're welcome. It's always nice to have a good debate about something.
Yeah. This thread actually made me think "Why do I like metal?". I like it for the skill of the instruments, and the intensity of the music itself. ^_^

Some responses were actually pretty good.
It's a shame that some members of this mature community don't have the ability to post an educated response, and hope that this will be some food for thought, I partly blame the name of the thread, hate is such a strong word, and wether you listen to or not, like or dislike, you shouldn't be hating a music genre.
Remember, music taste is up to the one listening. There's wonderful artists out there, for every music genre, and there's plenty of good music. Listening to different kinds, reading a bit of everything, trying what life has to offer is what makes you a rich person. It's never enough with your own point of view, listen to what others got to say and always look for the best of every discussion.

With that being said, I'll share my lil music video to support my favourite band. Sonata Arctica's music falls into the "metal" group. My father once taught me a word, to describe when a band or artist makes music that falls into many different genres that one is unable to define which one is the correct, I can't remember that word, but i believe this band falls into that description. Throughout the years they went from the Power'ish metal to something more progressive and that's what I love about them, there are similar songs, but they explore different styles and they show their love for making music this way.

Enjoy.
Sorry for the Poor English.

I like rap from the 90s. I like it because unlike this new age generic garbage 90s stuff had a message. NWA was spreading the message of violence in poor neighborhoods, Pac showed the message of excessive violence in the music industry, anyone before that was just doing it for fun and it sounded good.

Lets take a look at modern messages

  • 50 cent: I got shot yo, and heres a booty.
  • Lil Jon: I think I'll say n****r a thousand times to sound cool.
  • Kanye: I'm the greatest artist alive.
  • Eminem: I'm starting to use drugs again. (His old stuff was great though)
  • TI: I'll beat the crap out of anyone.

I don't see how you can call that rap. So if its not rap or any other genre its not music. I agree with you on Jay-Z however, a lot of his stuff still has a legitimate message.

EDIT: I also like old rap because it was a social music genre, mainstream rap is all claustrophobic and solo. Thats why I like metal, techno, classic rock. You go to a show, do one of the following, in this order; Bleed or cause bleeding, get high/drunk and dance, bang your head/see 1st action. After all this you shake hands and gain friends out of it. Tell me ONE rap show you went to where you gained a friend!
