Might I point out again that because TF2 provides a game (TF2) and not a service (Eve or WoW) that you can install Sourcemod plugins to turn off unlocks?
Like... this one?

And then you can play the game on your own server "the right way" as personally defined by you, with other people who subscribe to the same definition?
I mean, I'm just sayin'.
-----
And speaking of "just sayin' I get a bit annoyed with people telling me they've had to "learn the game all over again." While the new items have always changed the game
dynamics I've never once seen an item that's changed the way the game
works. Let's take my favorite hate object, the Eternal Reward.
OH MY GOD YOU STAB SOMEBODY AND INSTANTLY DISGUISE AS THEM BUT YOU LOSE YOUR DISGUISE KIT
Now, this changes
how you play spy as you lose your disguise kit... but nobody forces you to use the weapon. If you want to play "the right way" then you use the regular knife and cloak watch. So when somebody says they have to "relearn the entire game" they're not talking about this.
However... for the paranoid engineer (myself)... what has changed? Absolutely nothing. I don't play Engineer any different now that spies can backstab me and get my costume. Everyone who walks near me gets a clip of bullets by default. Anyone acting strange gets a second clip. Anyone near my sentry gets a wrench to the head. Nothing has changed, for me, with this update to new weapons.
Speaking of cloaks, here's another big gamechanger: you can choose between instant death-to-cloak or cloak-forever-if-you-dont-move. Gamechanger? Not in the least. If I shoot you, you run off and costume up because you had the dead ringer and come back... guess what? You're going to get a clip of bullets. Maybe two if you look suspicious. A wrench to the head when you go near my sentry. Your new weapon hasn't changed my game at all.
Sometimes the weapons seem a little more cheap. Sometimes they change YOUR style of play quite a bit (the Frontier Justice has made me much more vengeful upon the loss of Cindy the Sentry Gun). However, you can CHOOSE to use the new stuff or not. But by and large, other people having other weapons do not change the way you play as much as everyone says. You don't have to "relearn the whole game." You can elect to pick up a few more tactics if you wish (for example, if a single pistol shot kills you, I'm going to be looking for you Mr. Spy), but at the end of the day, a paranoid Engineer is still a paranoid Engineer.
At least, that's what I see. Much todo about nothing. Didja hear? They're working on new weapons! And they're going to completely break the game too!
