Maps.
Some are really well done and unique, don't get me wrong, but there are so many maps where people just take an already-made map, butcher it, or maybe just make one small change, and then act they put in so much hard work on it.
"BEHOLD....MY AMAZING CREATION...." Uhhh...I have played this before... "NO YOU HAVEN'T! See, there is an ammo crate over here now!"
Typically most "new maps" consist of one of three changes:
1) [map name] --> "[map name]er": This is when somebody--probably somebody who likes to just camp their own first--takes a map and opens up a few buildings so you can go in them. Granted, I honestly like this change, but enough for a new map? "Dang man, I always wished I could go inside this bathroom...." Well now you can! Sigh.
2) [map name] --> [map name]_1945: There is some strange phenomenon going on where apparently it didn't snow in 1945, because all _1945 seems to mean is "I got rid of the snow and being able to see your breath."
3) [map name] --> [map name]@night: We're not even going to go here. Seriously?
Some maps I have like 4-5 versions of, and it really makes me laugh when you see combinations of the aforementioned changes. I am still waiting on "kalter_1945@night"--it's only a matter of time, I say.
Then we have "arena" maps. Seriously, how old do these get? I know they're all different, but with that being said--they're all the same thing! I laugh when I see somebody take an orange arena map, paint the walls a different color, and then say, "Ah ha! Behold our new magenta arena!
Or how about when people "borrow" a map from another game. If I wanted to play Dust, I would go on CSS and play Dust...
CHALLENGE:
I know Dutch is making maps. I also know that he'll read this and comment on how he is making his own maps. That's nice, Dutch.
Anyways, my challenge is this...find some maps that are not just the "same old nonsense". I especially love ones that aren't your typical "mainland Europe" ones UNLESS they are amazingly-intricately done. The best are ones like "Chicago" (in USA), or ones in Africa (only ever seen 2-3) or how about some Asian ones? Half a war was fought in the Pacific--does nobody care?
Seriously though, I have 617 maps...it feels like everything there is to see, I've seen. Surprise me, huh? If you're feeling like a real overachiever, make something (kalter_1945@night, anybody?!).
