I've always been into games, from the C64 up till now with my PC and Xbox 360.
But I always hated playing online. It always felt that the skill level of everyone was was so sky high that I couldn't ever compete. Also I found that people in general would rather put you down and laugh at you than try to build you up.
My first real foray into online gaming was the original Unreal Tournament. Whilst it was fun for a few minutes I didn't like deathmatch games as I only had myself to rely on and I sucked. Tried various other games like Quake 3 and never stuck with them for very long.
Recently a workmate of mine was trying to get me into CSS, I gave it a go, and whilst it was nice being part of a team, I found the attitude of the other players really bad. Nobody would take time to help me out and if I messed up in some way, I would get abuse down the mic.
I really started to get annoyed with the hails of "******* noob" all the time. So I stopped playing.
I saw the Orange Box was coming out and I was really intreaged by Portal... So I polished off that in one sitting then loaded up TF2. Really wasn't gonna give it much time as I knew it was Online and my experience so far was pretty dire...
Went on a few servers, pretty much found the same attitude as on CSS and then I came across the Ego server. I instantly noticed the different attitude whilst playing. People who were rude got told to stop, I didn't understand at the time there was a clan, but I knew whoever was running it had an idea about how to make playing online a friendly experience...
Out of curiosity I looked up this site and had a read of the forum... I'd never thought of joining a clan before as I had always been under the impression that they were only for good players. One night I couldn't get into the ego server as it needed a password... I thought "This can't happen, its the only place I want to play" (i thought guests were not allowed anymore!!!!!) ... So I joined in the hope that I could then play whenever I liked.
Now I've been here a little while I've realised what a great clan ego is. It makes people feel welcome regardless of their skill level.
Now i'm here, I have made it my mission to try and help people enjoy the game, there's nothing worse than feeling like an outsider and not good enough.. Without ego, I would have given up of TF2 within a week and never played it again.
Thats my story... sorry if it made any of you want to hurl!!!
