No, I don't want you to ask me what my favorite color is or what my favorite food is.

What are you wanting to know about EdgeGamers as a Community? What is something you're curious about but feel you haven't received the answer to? Want to know what the Community Management team has been working on? Post it here and I will reply back.

Serious replies only. Memes will be deleted.

What goes into making decisions on new game support requests? Just honestly curious as to what those discussions look like. Obviously there is what is laid out in this thread. But I'm curious as to what kind of discussion happens at the CM+ level when deciding on how to support a new game. How does leadership get chosen, how are the discord servers setup, what's the timeline to decide on support after a proposal is finalized in step 5, and how long after that is support for the game finally in place? Things like that. Sorry to throw you such a big, multi-part question right off the bat.

Also, I'm totally cool with a "it depends" answer. Truly sometimes in life, it really just depends on the circumstances for each unique situation.

Why does tech seem so lackluster?

For LITERALLY years now we have been promised so much (example: MAUL 3 was "soonTM" in 2017) and yet there are little to no major results. This is seen both on the forums and the server(s).

Are we too picky with who we let on the tech team or are we simply too much of a peanutbrain community to fix tech issues?

Why do admins face hardly any punishment when someone reports them with a CL or messages a LE member? More specifically with CS, as I’m unsure how other games operate.

Too be frank I cannot even count on one hand the number of admins I know that
1. Don’t care enough about their job. (Sure it’s volunteer work, but if they don’t want to do it why let them in that position to begin with?)
2. Have been reported, but the response to said report comes back with a “we talked to them. It’s been handled.”
3. Simply straight up ignore their responsibilities and let just about anything slide.

When we have a problem, and it’s discussed in a group conversation amongst other members of the community and we bring up having issues with admins or something similar an LE will be quick to jump in and say “just make a CL” but I feel so discouraged, considering lack of action on more than one occasion in the past.

okay TehRaddish TehRaddish let me ask a better question (turdle reee)

Why is it that the suggestions forum gets zero love from leadership? The only posts I see that get any sort of response are from either GTA LE just looking into it or Jeff putting tags on the posts and just making a comment. I haven't seen any real follow-up with any suggestions except ones that have been implemented. There's no talk from leadership about pros and cons, no closing threads, or rarely anything other than discourse from players. This thread has been sitting since 2019 with one comment from an ex-community manager (who was a senior manager at the time).

For LITERALLY years now we have been promised so much (example: MAUL 3 was "soonTM" in 2017) and yet there are little to no major results. This is seen both on the forums and the server(s).
This is funny to me because with everyone I have talked to in tech, all I've heard was the same thing, MAULv3 soon, other things soon, be patient, but how long is it that we have been very patient, very lenient, and very understanding and these same exact things happened two years ago. Seriously, we have been patient for over two years at this point. Tech team has been, according to Don on the last page, in bad shape. Overlooking it between then and now, I've talked with multiple older members, and they say nothing has changed. Like where are the new priorities? Who has access to what and how active are they to serve requests? Why do things take an obscene amount of time to fix? Truly, I get it. Tech work sucks to do and it's a thankless job. But when these platitudes are being served almost every day like a factory, when should we expect anything to get done? I've seen numerous (small) errors on the forums only to go to a manager or someone who SHOULD have access to fix it just to say to me, "I'll get it submitted to our gitlab, but I can't fix it due to not having perms". Why is this a thing? When are we, as a community, going to see a change?

I 100% agree with this I think more just general perms to give even just member ranks out to people on forums and such should be given out to more staff just from my experience of reaching out to 2-4 staff members including kuantum just to get the member rank on the forum confuses me. Personally I think if you can accept an app you should be able to hand out the according perms to the new member.

also dark mode would be nice

just some updates on these issues would be nice and I think could greatly improve efficiency and just overall experience especially on the forums if developed and implemented

It depends.

I couldn't resist. When games are looked at by the Community Management team, the basic check list items that are listed in that thread you've linked are where we start our conversation. Probably the largest factor is the community support around the game. Are there enough EdgeGamers members who play this game to be worth while for us to allocate time to building it? From there, a plan is pulled together on an roll-out.

However, there will always be "that game" that comes along that is thrown up much quicker than others. These games tend to be sheer luck of success and capitalizing by being at the right place at the right time. Squad is a good example of this.

Leaders are selected based on opportunity or those who show their ability to lead. For Overwatch, Wish was the clear leader out the gate as we developed support for the game. Alternatively (throwback inbound) a game like Insurgency servers were put up and (throwback inbound again) the Council team monitored the player and admin base to determine the best person to move into a leadership role.

What is taking so long for a dark mode on the forums

Not a priority. Tech team consists of a few members with responsibilities that run extremely wide due to the large demand our community asks for. Dark mode is not a priority when other tasks take much higher priority. Know someone with experience that can help? Contact @crc1225 or @Logic Overflow.

The common thought of those who sit "on the outside" from tech is that they never deliver on anything.

How dare these people who are responsible for keeping our servers and website turned on now do what I want them to do on the timeline I want it done, when I have no clue their priorities/work load or the development required to fulfill their requests.

On a more serious front - think of Tech like this.

You sit at the dinner table and are told you must clean your plate before you can get up and leave. Every time you take one bite of food, someone comes by and puts four large portions of food back on your plate. You keep trying to take bites to be able to fulfill the task of cleaning your plate before you leave but you witness the mountain of food piling up and realize there is simply no way you're ever going to leave.

Most people will respond "Just get more people OMEGALUL." If only it was that easy. The amount of technical knowledge required to function our back end is not like it used to be.

"Well Legend, it's just dragging some files or running some commands...I have run Counter-Strike servers before!"

Not even close. Our Tech leaders have developed a very secure and stable system that ensures our platforms are available long term. It's much more intricate than just dragging some files and typing some commands. In order to provide a sustainable experience for years to come this is completely necessary. This means that when new members of Tech are onboarded, more training is required to get these individuals up to speed. That is...when we can find additional members to onboard.

Tech's priority list continues to change and evolve daily. "We" as operational leaders and "you" as players continue to ask more of them. When they start on a project like MAUL, we demand they pivot because we need something else. Maybe we want a new Counter-Strike server. Maybe we want to open a new game. Maybe we want a new addon on the forums. Maybe we need to develop new Discord bots. Which would you rather want? Do you want them to develop MAUL 3.0 when we have a working and functional version of MAUL in our current state, or would you like them to ensure that our Counter-Strike servers are turned on and that we have the infrastructure setup for the rest of the community to operate smoothly? These are the things that the Operations team along with the partnership of the Technical team have to live through daily.

Consistency is key when it comes to handling reports. There's two things that I will address here.
  • What I think happens as a result of the report
  • What actually happens as a result of the report
When Leadership posts the "Thank you for reporting this, we have addressed it accordingly!" the response can be translated to - Hey, we can't responsibly talk about the results to you as it would be an injustice to the individual involved. We are not a community where we air peoples laundry for all to say. To avoid drama and to allow people to grow from situations, these things typically happen privately.

What people may THINK happens is that a post is made from Leadership and it is brushed under the rug.

What ACTUALLY happens is hours worth of discussions over voice or by Discord / Forums on how to handle the situation based on EdgeGamers values.

Are we perfect in this? Hell no. We have a lot of work to do on consistency of not only reports but also bans addressed in Ban Contest and Ban Requests across the community. This is a focus point over the next 3 months to have addressed by the Community Management team and we will partner with the Sr. Managers and Managers to make sure reports and bans are handled consistently across the community as frequently as possible.

To finish things - If you feel that there is an admin who...

1. Don’t care enough about their job. (Sure it’s volunteer work, but if they don’t want to do it why let them in that position to begin with?)
2. Have been reported, but the response to said report comes back with a “we talked to them. It’s been handled.”
3. Simply straight up ignore their responsibilities and let just about anything slide.

...and nothing is being done, you can send a message to your Community Manager & @Arbiter. They're here to support.

I love this idea and also love Legend just dropping truth bombs over here.

I have nothing to ask but needed to send a thank you for reaching out to the community to answer any and all questions that you possibly can! :)

Does Edegamers have any long term goals to meet, going forward? Are there plans for reaching these goals?

If so, what are these goals, and what are the preliminary plans to achieve them?
We don't believe in goals.

Kidding. The Sr. Managers+ meet quarterly to outline action items and goals per quarter. These range from individual game & project to entire community focuses. You'll have to take my word for it that the list is exhaustive and reaches all areas of the community.

I think I did an adequate job of dodging specifics with the statement above. To hopefully make this post adequate, my current goal and focus is to organize our financials to identify areas of opportunity to streamline costs to enable us to grow into new games or offer more exciting things in our current games (like events, addons, etc). This project has be combing through every PayPal transaction over the last handful of years. That's a lot of transactions for anyone thinking it's a walk in the park - I am currently on week 3 of the project. Additionally, I am in contact with potential sponsor and partner opportunities that will hopefully come to fruition in the coming months.

"I'll get it submitted to our gitlab, but I can't fix it due to not having perms". Why is this a thing? When are we, as a community, going to see a change?
Because processes need to be in place rather than the "let's just throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" approach.

EdgeGamers from a technical standpoint has never had processes, protocols and procedures documented on how stuff works and how stuff should be done from within Tech. It all usually falls on who can get it done first and quick. This results in significant inconsistencies with little documentation and means that anyone else who comes along later will look at the work like this...

More people gain access as more people are trained. More people will be trained once the processes and procedures are defined. Those things will happen when we eliminate some of the technical work that the Tech Team is buried in, and when more people are brought on to the team.

The "LOL JUST FIX IT" approach is not an option here.

For those of you mostly curious about Tech matters - It's easy to judge the Tech team on their work, but just remember...without them here...you wouldn't have servers.
