On killing right out of cells...

IT'S 5-10 MINUTES. calm down and get this into your brain: THE GAMEMODE IS BUILT TO BE LONG ROUNDS. don't like it? QUIT. i'm tired of hearing about "oh my god now i gotta wait 5-10 minutes because the warden is too trigger happy."

Thing is, people have been quitting and the server rank shows it. Being killed right out of cells for facing the wrong way or being an inch too far back is just absurd and not realizing this is a problem for many pubs and regulars is just ignorant.

There's a fine line between maintaining a consistent server environment, and adapting to the desire of our "server audience", if I can put it that way. On one hand, nobody's going to be happy all the time with every game/decision that's made - but that's one of the reasons why jail is fun to play. Poking fun at a warden, rebelling against poorly executed orders, all of these things that might at first seem sub-par can actually improve the jail experience.

On the other hand, as you said, when people start to leave for good because they're fed up with terrible orders/borderline freekilling, there's a big problem. If we can't satisfy the desires of those that play on the server, then what's the point? Sure, the rounds might be designed to be 11 minutes long, but if nobody's going to play if we tell them to just "deal with it", then why would we abide by that?

It really comes down to, what's going to get our server more frequent players? Certainly, using the rounds as they were "designed" won't accomplish the job, and, to reiterate, neither will killing terrorists for bad reasons.

I was considering posting this for myself, but using the search I was able to find this post by Cyanide and to put it simply, I can not word it any better than he did.

Yes this is a bump, but I feel it really ruins jail especially when the warden has a mic that is very scratchy and one can only hear the general aura of the order.

"all t's, step out of your cells, face away from your cells, and freeze", and then proceed to kill all terrorists that are facing their cells.
They failed to do the Warden's orders, so they die. That's the entire point of CT on Jail.. so this thread already makes no sense.

They might be facing the wrong direction, and technically, they're disobeying orders, but it's not putting any counter-terrorist in any danger, so why kill them for it?
The warden may have told me to run to four corners, but I decided to run to maze and face the door. I might be at the wrong location, technically I'm disobeying orders but I'm not harming any guards so why should I die for it?

Thread. Sense. Has none.

To be honest, those who play jail and die for not following a simple order like that, are at fault.

people whine and complain all the time about jail taking too long, or how they have to wait a few minutes because they didn't follow an order and died.

no he isn't, you didn't listen to a simple order and died for it, it's your fault not his. PLAY THE GAME PROPERLY, or don't play.

Seriously, get real.

P.S. this isn't to sound rude, but it's the truth, and what's on my mind.

My Phantom Brother is correct, if you died from something that simple, TOUGH! You should be listening if you don't want to die! It's like complaining about failing a test you didn't study for, if you wanted to pass STUDY! Just like this, if you want to live LISTEN!

This as well ^ +1

Its not so much killing them for disobeying orders, but being deliberately vague in giving orders just to confuse Ts to be allowed to kill them.

I'd object to comparing getting killed right out of cells with running to an incorrect location, for several reasons.

When the cell doors first open, all of the terrorists are in one location. Not only that, if they're told to freeze right out of their cell, then they're not only in the same place, but they're stationary. Hence, the only reason why you'd kill somebody for facing the wrong direction is because you're looking for reasons to kill terrorists. Again, there is absolutely no threat to the counter-terrorists; if there's a gun in the cells on a particular map, I always give the terrorists a few chances to turn around first before shooting. Why? Because what are they going to do with a glock when I'm across the map with a rifle?

To compare this to your example, the terrorists aren't all necessarily in a nice neat line, and so aren't really in the same place. They're also moving, which increases the risk to the CTs. Lastly, if somebody's running to the wrong place, and they don't respond to warnings (or it's clear they're making a break for a gun), then the threat to the CTs is substantially increased. So it's much more appropriate to shoot in this situation than it is right out of cells.

I understand the point some of you are trying to make - largely, that it's the terrorists' own fault for not paying proper attention to the orders. Further, that 5-10 minutes isn't actually that long, and if you don't want to wait that long, then don't play jail. What I'd respond with is two-fold. Firstly, jail is a game. Why would I play a game when I don't have fun? Nobody wants to sit and watch other people playing for 10 minutes, only to sit for 1 minute jumping around a tiny cell, to be shot and have to spend another 10 minutes watching. As has been pointed out before, this has led to emptying of our jail server in the past. I think we've come a long way since the time I originally posted this thread, but nonetheless, we need to be mindful of the entertainment value that jail can, and should, provide. Dying right out of cells effectively kills that entertainment value. Secondly, while it is technically a violation of the warden's orders to face the wrong direction, it's an unsatisfying, and infuriating way to die - particularly when you wish to participate in the games that the warden subsequently plays (which you now have to watch). This, in my opinion, is not "just part of jail" - this is what's killing jail. It's a great example of poor wardening. "Well, you should have been listening" is, in my opinion, a terrible retort to my assertion, because it's not real life. I don't think it's anything like "studying for an exam", as Phantom373 says, since jail isn't real life. It should be much more relaxed than that.

The bottom line for me is what keeps people in the server. If some aspects of jail, that are technically within the rules, cause people to ragequit...then why would we continue to do it? It's illogical from a gaming standpoint, and more practically, from a server-filling standpoint. We want to attract people to our jail server, and setting ourselves apart by not advocating this kind of pointless killing (even if it's within the warden's right to do so) is a great way to make our jail server a step above the others out there. And that's what it's all about! Having fun, and attracting people to our servers who have fun while they play on our servers as well. :)

As self appointed leader of the Jail Defense Squadron, I still 100% agree with Cyanide on this matter, and Ts dieing right out of cells simply for facing the wrong way or being 1 extra step out of their cell is ridiculous and needs to stop.

jail is a game.

This 'nuff said

don't be strict, make jail fun, dont give boring orders, let the ts have fun and give smart orders that dont end up killing your whole team.

Edit: Now let me rephrase this a little more. I find strict cts fun because I find it difficult to rebel, and i like a challenge. But i like being a fun guard and play the games on the map. In other words, its a game, stop taking this too cereal, jail is getting a revamp of jail rules. Calm your faces

Here's my two cents:

From personal experience I can agree with this. I stumbled upon this server not too long ago. When I first started playing I didn't have too much of a clue what was going on as I kept being killed for bumping my mouse while facing the cell and it caused me to look to the right a little, or not having both feet COMPLETELY on the spray. It made me quit as I spent most of my time spectating and not playing at all. After awhile I decided to come back and give it another shot. For a few days in a row, the wardens were helping people out (i.e. "I said face AWAY") instead of blasting them immediately and laughing about it. This allotted me time to play, get a feel for, and understand the game better, enticing me to join up and play there regularly. I know there are a vast majority of people out there who have had similar experiences, I have noticed and watched many new faces become regulars because at some point someone took the time to say "No, go THIS way" or "face AWAY" instead of killing immediately for a minor discrepancy, whereas others have played only once or twice and never came back as they were shot instantly for looking the wrong way or bumping their mouse, causing them to twitch as a result. On the flip side, I keep hearing about how jail USED to be this way or that way on issues (similar to this) that were changed and watch old regulars disappear as a result. Kind of makes me feel like these types of issues are a double-edged sword.

I don't think an "It's jail, be harsh, learn the ropes, get over it" attitude is the correct approach. At the same time, I don't really know what kind of approach should be made to keep the server filled. As Cyanide previously stated, Jail is an adaptive game, the rules constantly changing to appease to the majority at the time. At this time, it seems the majority doesn't like being killed instantaneously for looking the wrong way when taking a step out of their cells at this time. If there is a rule made against this, maybe at a later time people will complain jail is too easy and CTs are too lenient and this will come back. All I know is that the server seems to be doing well at the moment and this is becoming an issue again, especially with the new credit system making us itch to kill each other.

I don't think anyone in this thread is taking this to heart or taking it too serious, they are just voicing their opinions on the current trend. Need more like it.

I think everybody in this thread needs to look at the jail rules under the warden section. This entire discussion is moot.

Whether our admins are actually enforcing these rules is an entirely different story.
